Boylston Street: Worst Crosswalk Signal Ever, originally uploaded by stevegarfield.
They installed these crosswalk buttons incorrectly and tried to make it better by using signage. If they installed the buttons the right way in the first place, the signs would not be necessary.
The button needs to be pointed in the direction of the street. This is the worst installation I have ever seen!

Where is it on Boylston? Is it a button that turns the WALK light (and red light) on in all directions at once, thus making the arrow irrelevant?

Each button turns the walk light on in one direction. It's just confusing which direction that is.
