Ike-related price gouging

Ed. note: No link because the original poster took down his post. He explains in the comments.

Cleary Squared noticed that the price of a gallon of regular jumped more than 30 cents yesterday at Best of Boston and SP Petrol on Washington Street in Roslindale.

happened in CT too

By Brett | Sat, 09/13/2008 - 1:12pm

According to a friend's FB status message, gas jumped 50 cents in CT in less than 8 hours.

Remember, gotta keep those oil industry profits up (and have some wiggle-room to lower gas prices before the election.)

And now a gas line

By adamg | Sat, 09/13/2008 - 2:25pm

But in a good way: There was a small line outside the Hess station on Washington Street in West Roxbury today - people waiting for the $3.40 gas (no line across the street at the place selling gas for $3.38, but maybe because they take cash only).

Stations are getting screwed

By SwirlyGrrl | Sat, 09/13/2008 - 10:12pm

Hard to believe, but some run on such razor thin margins, they are making most if not all of their money off of the convenience stores!

I wouldn't grudge the little guys ... best to lay the blame where it belongs: the oil companies making record profits. The station owners aren't seeing that windfall, and are doing what they can to stay afloat.

Centre St. prices up too

Prices at Hess & the other Centre St. stations are up about 20 cents this afternoon too.

I removed the post thanks to my own ignorance

By Cleary Squared | Sat, 09/13/2008 - 7:59pm

After reading the comments here, I removed the post from my blog.

I was just shocked beyond belief that the gas stations I mentioned - usually the most dependable for low prices - would raise them that high. (At least we haven't gotten to CT-style spikes, but to go from $3.45 to $3.79 - ouch!) Now that Hess and Lukoil raised theirs by the amounts as U-Hub mentioned, it makes sense to raise the prices to prevent panic buying and shortages - which is what I've said in plenty of my posts back at my blog.

On the good side of this, though, I've been reading that the Houston Shipping channel and many of the other refineries in Texas were spared, although it might take some time to get them on line and producing again. Once that's done, gasoline prices will fall again, perhaps further down than before Ike hit.

Here is the replacement post I did this morning.

How to deal with the Ike gas spike
