2009 Sox schedule released: late start, even later finish
By Ron Newman - 9/17/08 - 2:36 pm
The Red Sox have officially released their 2009 schedule. We open at home against the Rays, and close at home against the Indians.
Interleague matchups: Mets at home (in May), Philadelphia away, Florida at home, Atlanta at home, Washington away, Atlanta away.
The regular season starts a week later than usual - Monday, April 6 -- and therefore stretches into the first week of October. The World Series could end as late as November 5th -- eek! That's after Election Day.

Thanks, Ron
You know, I've thought for some time that the schedule should be cut back to 154 games, as it was until the 60's. What with the additional playoff rounds, it's ridiculous to be playing ball in late October/early November weather.
Chance of it ever happening? Nil.

I'd rather see it start
I'd rather see it start earlier than later. Fill in some of the doldrum time of april and avoid overlap with the NFL.
Of course, Bud Selig is completely incompetent so don't hold your breath on this.
Conversely
Weather in many cities is still bad for baseball in early April. Remember how a series between Seattle and Cleveland was snowed out a couple of years ago? Much better to start the season on April 6th than on March 30th.
Don't open at home in northern cities
The way to avoid that problem is to schedule the first week's games in southern cities -- not in Cleveland, Boston, NYC, etc.
Do we really want the World Series played below the freezing point? Some day it will occur in that brand-new open-air Minnesota stadium.
I hate when it cuts into the
I hate when it cuts into the Patriots games, grrrr
