Concord farmstand burns to the ground

Verrill Farms this afternoon:

Sadness

I've lead several rides for MassBike from Arlington to Verrill Farm, for fundraising events and cycling celebrations. I suspect that Ron Newman has too. The Verrill Family has always been quite generous with their property and food for fund raising and community events.

My kids used to go there for farm tours when they were in preschool. It always felt more like a working farm than a "farm stand".

I hope that those organizations to whom the Verrill family have been so generous over the years will be willing to give a little back so that they may rebuild. It will be tough, as I suspect that fall is a big season for them.

Then again, they still have the land ... and they used to run the farmstand out of a series of tents anyway. I'd occasionally stop by on my commute between Cambridge and Littleton in the late 80s and I remember it. I hope that they are able to at least partially reopen soon.

Drove by there

Yesterday at 6ish and again around 11. It was burning pretty good still at 6 and it was a total loss at 11. Main building is toast. Pretty sad, that place is a local institution. It didn't help that the had to pump water from 117 by the Dunkin Donuts and from Plainfield Road. The amoun of time it took them to set up surely made a big difference in the amount of damage. They probably wouldn't have been able to save it no matter what...but who knows.

Time of year

I used to purchase a lot of my fall items around the corner at Arena Farms but they closed last year. I hope the Verrills will continue to sell while they rebuild. I was looking for a new place to go and this seemed like a nice place.

Verrills to open a farmstand on Monday
