To the drunken college students who stole the poor old woman's bird bath on Mission Hill

Just put it back. Yes, the one you took from 171 Hillside St. the weekend before last.

Boston Police report the woman, 93, is heartbroken:

... [She] fills the bird bath and watches the birds everyday. She has lived in Mission Hill since the 1960s and says that nothing like this has ever happened to her before and would like her property returned. ...

doubtful it was drunken students

By Brett | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 7:36pm

It was probably scrap metal scavengers. They've been going after anything and everything they can get their hands on- the field by Alewife didn't have water fountains because asshat scavengers kept stealing them.

Material?

By Jiffywoob | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 7:48pm

I thought bird baths were usually made out of concrete?

But I do question the assertion that it had to have been drunken students. Certainly possible, but she must have a pretty big "jump to conclusions" mat lining her living room floor, unless she's the type of 93-year old woman whose optimal time to enjoy watching birds out her window lies in the middle of the night, enabling her to make such an accurate claim.

I feel bad for the lady, but sheesh.

Nearby Universities?

By MadMax | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 7:41pm

Wouldn't it be a nice gesture on the part of the nearby Universities to buy this lady a even nicer birdbath?

In short, no. Once this

By riggssm | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 7:53pm

In short, no.

Once this particular door is opened, it never gets closed again. There's a misconception among the townies here that every bad thing that happens to them is because of/due to/the direct result of a college student.

Just ain't true.

"townies"?

By aging cynic | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 10:08pm

Presuming you don't mean people from Charlestown, it would appear that your assimilation here is a work in progress. Word of advice: when there are a quarter-million of ANYTHING in one small geographic area, it would be stupid to ignore their presence when making a finding of facts. On the brighter side, it would appear that unlike many students here, you plan to leave after graduation. Godspeed!

huh?

By riggssm | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 10:42pm

"Townie" is the word I grew up with, and because that's the best condescension I have to describe the accusatory residents of the hill, I'm assumed to be a college student? And college students are the root of all evil in Roxbury Crossing? And I'm planning to leave "after graduation"?

Uh. /facepalm

The facts ... well, fact: the birdbath is gone. That's it. Sad story, yeah, but it has nothing to do with local universities.

Agreed, its not the fault of the college

By anon-a-mouse | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 10:51pm

But I would certainly say there is a strong likelihood that it was a college student who messed with the lady's birdbath.

Report: "Drunk college kids."

By Gareth | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 6:34am

A resident reported that a bird bath was stolen from her home at 171 Hillside Street in Mission Hill late Saturday night into Sunday morning, Sept 14-15, from drunk college kids.

The 93 year old lady who is missing her birdbath says it was drunken college students. That's good enough for me. She probably sleeps lightly and spends a lot of time looking out the window.

I thought the stereotype was

By Arborway | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 11:04pm

I thought the stereotype was that all students leave Boston when they can't find affordable housing in the city after they graduate, and thus have no ties to the community?

"among the townies" Another

By ShadyMilkMan | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 7:01am

"among the townies" Another one who swoops in where someone else lives and then proceeds to label them as townies, now tell us how you really feel. That could be one of the reasons why the "townies" dont like ya'll much.

right

By anon-a-mouse | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 7:57pm

the schools certainly would not want to own up responsibility...it would be a way of saying "yeah our students wreck your neighborhood"

I used to live across the street and remember that house. It was, when I was there< a pretty quiet neighborhood as far as Mission Hill goes.

No, if Google maps is

By Miss M | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 7:45pm

No, if Google maps is correct it was just an old-school ceramic bird bath and the thieves were just assholes.

Hypothetical question

By Miss M | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 8:01pm

If I called the number the police listed and asked if I could replace the bird bath, would they be annoyed?

My grandmother's bird bath was a constant source of joy to her, so this has kind of struck a nerve with me.

Aw ...

By adamg | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 8:14pm

I wouldn't think they'd mind. In fact, if you need some help paying for the bird bath, let me know.

I would contribute $10

By pierce | Mon, 09/22/2008 - 8:28pm

I would contribute $10

Me too

By Marc | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 1:21am

I'll put in $10 as well, but only if I am sure it really going to this woman.

Adam G, this is a challenge for your 1st class Boston Blogmeister abilities. I BET you CANT set up a blog-a-thon donation thing for us to replace it!

(But if you CAN, we'll all contribute!)

Cool!

By adamg | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 7:01am

First step: Contact the detectives to see if she'd want a new bird bath (and who knows, to see if maybe there isn't already a fund). I'll do that this morning.

Adam, I'm in for 10 bucks.

By riggssm | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 8:20am

Adam, I'm in for 10 bucks.

Obviously

By Miss M | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 10:00am

I'm in for a donation too, and I'd be happy to coordinate actually purchasing the birdbath.

I'm a college student and I

By RhoninFire | Wed, 09/24/2008 - 2:53am

I'm a college student and I want to chip in 10 dollars too!

(Who or How should I donate this money?)

The google informs me that quality bird baths...

By withayou | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 8:00am

Come in at or under $100.

That shouldn't be hard to raise (if the woman is in fact ok with it).

I'm in for $10.

'townie' here

By Brain_Dali | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 8:22am

Will gladly chip in $20 between myself and my 'townie' wife to help replace this. Why? Because I give a shit about my 'townie' neighborhood.

I'm a townie

By Jiffywoob | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 4:06pm

And my bike was stolen last month. Probably -- nay, most assuredly -- by those drunk-ass gownies. Can we set up a fund for a new one for me? I used to love riding it around town.

Nasty

By Whit | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 9:45am

What a nasty little response, Aging Cynic. You really ought to be ashamed of yourself. What did those mean-old undergrads do to you exactly? Make you feel jealous of their youthful freshness and superior intellect perhaps?

Me, too

By Rhea | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 9:46am

Doing something good like replacing the birdbath can turn a sad situation into a very positive one for the woman.

No update yet

By adamg | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 10:02am

I left my number on voice mail for area B-2's community service officer to see how we can help.

I'd like to kick in 10

By bherne | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 1:50pm

I'd like to kick in 10 bucks...

Over The Top

By Suldog | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 3:06pm

I mean, if I contribute $10, that should put the total there. OK. I'm in.

Birdbath Contributions?

By Suldog | Wed, 09/24/2008 - 2:09pm

Is someone coordinating this? Would someone like to? I've got 10 big simoleons just burning a hole in my pocket, itching to get out there and buy some birds a swimming pool!

Regardless of who the thief is,

By independentminded | Tue, 09/23/2008 - 11:12pm

How meanspirited can some people get??!? That woman obviously derived a certain amount of happiness and joy from the birdbath, and that fact that some nasty person stole it from her for his/her own good times is rather disguating, imho.

She got a new bird bath!

By adamg | Wed, 09/24/2008 - 2:33pm

Just got off the phone with somebody in community services at Area B-2: Northeastern University bought her a new bird bath yesterday, so no donations needed.
