An epidemic of dogs leashed to strollers

Jeff Cutler reports on the phenomenon of new mothers leashing their dogs to their baby's strollers, at least as observed on Newbury Street:

... I'm pretty certain if a life-size Chuck Wagon truck or a wild deer dashed through downtown, these dogs would be galloping across busy streets dragging mothers, infants and strollers through traffic to certain doom.

And if not doom, definitely destruction.

Where did common sense go off the rails? The likelihood of the Chuck Wagon or the deer showing up on Newbury Street in Boston is a fantasy. But a pickup truck with dogs in the back could happen. And the reality of nearly identical mommy/stroller/puppy combos on the other side of the street is common. ...

I've been wondering about the wisdom of doing that too. Same goes for dogs leashed to bicycles. There was a near miss with some guy riding a bike, while on his cell phone, and "walking" his dog a few weeks ago.

My new favorite was the woman on the Watertown bike path yapping on her cell phone while standing still in the middle of the path with her two small dogs who were leashed to each other only and standing on opposite sides of the width of the path so that the leash stretched across it. This actually forced me off my bike since my repeated shouts of "excuse me" were completely unheard/ignored. She's a repeat offender, but this was the first time the dogs were actually attached to anything. Usually she has them running wherever while she ignores them and the world around her as she stands in the middle of the path and yaps on the phone. Someone someday is going to hit her or one of her dogs and it's not going to be the fault of the cyclist.
