Those would not cost the state anything.

there is no free lunch. Even email costs something. Still probably a good idea.

That would be convenient. But to play devil's advocate...

Of course there is upfront development and deployment cost, and ongoing operational costs.

It would also have to be considered a courtesy, not a guaranteed process, since email is unreliable.

There's also the issue of whether people without ready email access would be marginalized and therefore more likely to inadvertently have an expired license (which can be a serious legal offense).

Coming from someone who works in a field where we email people notices and information on a regular basis you would be amazed at how many people change their emails, or how many are wrong. Plus someone has to put all those names and emails in the system. They also have to make sure the right messages are going to the right people ect... The whole set up would need to be maintained, it couldnt be 100 percent automatic, you would still be using someones time to make it work, plus high upfront costs to build a reliable program capable of getting the right info at the right time to the right person.

I've gotten one when I was past due for an inspection.

Im "glad" I went 2 weeks ago. They say wait times wont get any worse, but come on.

And I also think Thursdays (or any one day of the week) should be from 12-8pm to accommodate those of us with later work shifts. The current one hour shift (from 9-5 to 10-6) isnt good enough.

I once found out from my insurance company in a "hi there, you're no longer licensed, we're pulling your insurance" that my license had been suspended and I'd been driving around for at least a couple days.

Mind you, the registration is legally obligated to give you 30 days notice, but instead, they just flipped it off and didn't tell anyone.

When I called the RMV to ask what the hell was going on, after some typing noises, the guy said "You're all set now", and 15 minutes later, my insurance agent confirmed it in her system. "Oh, this happens all the time. People first find out from us, call the registry, and magically the suspension disappears."

Yet another state service fucked up by Danny G.

I've figured out a special way to remember when my license expires. I carry a little laminated card in my pocket every day that has the date on it when my license expires. And... it's my birthday too, yeah.
