It's still summer
for two more weeks on the calendar. Even after that, episodes of hot summer-like weather can continue into October. So yes, wear white or other light reflective colors until the heat is really gone for the year.
Uhh...
Ron, I don't think the rule has anything to do with reflection/absorption of heat. I think it has to do with wearing appropriate fashions, much like one wears different attire depending on whether a wedding or other event takes place in the afternoon or evening.

But never, ever ...
... wear white shoes after Labor Day.
Not even Reeboks?
or New Balance?
NO!
You shouldn't wear white sneakers ever. Well, MAYBE you can if you're over about 75. Otherwise, they're hideous.

Wear what you want.
Not only no white shoes, but also ....
No white pocketbooks, belts, or accessories, either. It is just wrong. (I am from Marblehead and we *know* these things.)
I'm not sure...
...anyone should wear a white belt or shoes or bag ANY time of the year. Unless like it's Easter and you're 5.
Oh, the other day someone referred to my messenger bag as a "pocketbook." Um, no.
