Not just your imagination: Hollywood really is fixated on Boston thugs

Sam Baltrusis runs down the EIGHT upcoming movies and pilots about Boston's lovable muggers and thieves. And it looks like Charlestown is in a death match with Southie for the title of grittiest neighborhood in Boston: Two of the movies highlight Townie, um, pride?

One features Dot rat Donnie Wahlberg as a Townie "cop determined to protect the streets he grew up on from crime and corruption." The other is called, simply, "The Town" and stars Cambridge's Ben Affleck.

This sounds good for Boston permitting revenue and catering people.

What do the Boston tourism people think about the gritty portrayals?

And coming soon, the true story of a band of disgruntled bourgeois kids who work at a supermarket by day and beat each other up in the playground by night. Oh, and did we mention they're Irish, mostly? You've heard of the tough streets of Southie, but have you heard of the tough streets of Westie? It's like fight club, but with celery. You've heard about those thuggy Boston Irish before, but you've never seen them wearing the green like this!

Mass culture has gotten so weird when almost everything on TV is either some overly made up bimbo eating bugs or a police procedural.

Next up: a reality show where D-list bimbos get to be cops for a day. Oh my go-od, I've totally got some, like, DNA on this?

For awhile, at least, Dennis Lehane used to eat breakfast at Auntie B's on Centre Street. I'm sure he picked up some good inspiration there (and let's not forget the Finagle-a-Bagel/LaGrange Street cocaine connection).
