Man charged with beating girlfriend, dog

Miguel Roberto Del Pozo Castillo, 26, was arrested early Sunday on charges he beat his girlfriend in their Joy Street apartment and threw her chihuahua against a wall so hard its paw was broken, according to the Suffolk County DA's office.

Castillo was scheduled for arraignment in Boston Municipal Court today. According to prosecutors, Castillo went into a beating rage because he thought his girlfriend was stepping out on him.

Castillo pleaded innocent, bail was set at just $1,000 for charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, malicious destruction of property, larceny over $250, resisting arrest, providing a false name to a police officer, and animal cruelty, the Suffolk DA's office says, adding it had asked for bail of $5,000.

Oh, and Castillo told investigators he's a student at Harvard, according to the DA's office, which adds the woman is bruised but otherwise physically OK. More details from a press release:

Boston Police responded to the scene shortly after 3:00 a.m. for a report of domestic violence, finding the victim visibly upset. The woman told officers that she had come home after a night out with friends to find her apartment door open and Castillo present.

Castillo was angry and believed she had been with another man, the victim said. He pushed and punched her, knocked over her furniture, and emptied all her drawers, she told the officers. He also allegedly stole her wallet and purse, then took her pet Chihuahua and threatened to kill it. When she asked for the dog back, he allegedly shoved her to the floor and left in a taxi.

The responding officers located the dog outside the building. It was trembling, bleeding, and unable to walk due to an injury to its paw. Feces on its hindquarters and feces on several areas of the door and walls suggested to officers that he had thrown it at least three times.

As the officers interviewed the victim and a female friend, the friend's phone rang. The call came from the victim's cell phone, which Castillo had allegedly stolen. Castillo told the friend that he had thrown the dog out the taxi window and gone to friend's house in Cambridge. When an officer took the phone and urged Castillo to return to the apartment to speak in person, he refused.

"I'm not a fool," he allegedly told the officer. "You will arrest me."

But then he showed up a couple hours later, anyway. The woman promptly called police, who this time arrested him.

Why else would anybody ever want to leave a gem of a brat like this guy?

Like, maybe he doesn't realize that violent temper tantrums aren't attractive?

This guy is still around the Harvard Square area. Stay away far far away from him! He was at a club Monday night just this week.
