A Day around Beantown

By DarkSun - 11/2/08 - 7:56 pm

Friday, I spent pretty much the whole day running errands and taking care of various business issues, and as a result I spent a whole lot of time riding the T from destination to destination, from the North Shore to the South Shore and many places in between. Over the course of the day I was on the Red Line multiple times, and unfortunately I experienced minor delays (2-7 min each time) multiple times while on trains on the Red Line. But it was notable that each time without fail, the operator not only explained what was going on and how long we were going to be delayed approximately, the operator did this each time before the delay began, so there was never a period of time when people were left wondering, "Why aren't we moving?"

However, the most notable event occurred on an outbound Red Line train around the Longfellow Bridge: I heard a woman some distance from where I was sitting in the car, speaking quite loudly on her cell phone - and while that in itself wasn't unusual, what she was talking about was quite unusual... she just couldn't quit talking loudly about how much she loooooves the T, how nice the T is, and how cheap it is to take the T. She even mentioned how the parking rate at the station she usually parks at is going to go up soon, but stated that even the increased rate was still going to be sooo cheap.

I think I may have finally come across someone who appears to be a bigger fan of the T than I am.

Suspicious

- Has the T hired some of those stealth buzz-generator marketing people to spread the "T is good" meme?

- Counterpoint: I had to travel all around Boston on Wednesday of last week and was annoyed as hell at the delays with no announcements whatever, including plenty of stops in dark tunnels just outside stations. In fact, I was wondering if the union was staging another work slowdown by "obeying all posted signs and not moving the bus until all passengers had fully boarded." or whatever the guideline says. Anyway, things didn't seem quite right.

Hmm...

I suppose it's certainly possible. That woman I encountered certainly seemed rather unusually excited about extolling the purported virtues of the T...

I wasn't on the T too much last Wednesday, just the usual commute to and from work. Didn't notice anything unusual, so I dunno...
