Thug to go away forever for Dorchester murder

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today found Jovon Adams, 24, guilty of all charges related to a May 15, 2007 shooting at Franklin Field that left a man dead and a woman with gunshot wounds, the Suffolk County DA's office reports.

Because the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Cordelro Andrade, Adams will be sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. An alleged accomplice, Taquise Johnson, will be tried at a later date, according to the DA's office.

In court, prosecutors charged the murder sprung from events the day before, when Adams pulled a gun during a dispute between a female relative and Andrade's sister outside the Franklin Field housing project. The two women got into it again the next day and Adams and Johnson went down to Franklin Field to end the matter once and for all, prosecutors charged:

The groups crossed paths at about 5:00 on Ames Street, where Adams and Johnson allegedly opened fire on Andrade. Andrade was hit multiple times and later died of his injuries at Boston Medical Center. The second victim was hit in the leg and survived her injury.

I'm not far from this young man's age, and although I might rail against various policies as being 'un-free', I can't help but reflect at this moment what it would be like to be in prison for life without parole.

What would drive someone to kill ? More than one life is lost through homicide when justice is served, and the absurdity of it is overwhelming.

I don't have a good understanding of the various causes behind shootings in the Boston area. Some speculation:

* Living in an environment in which violent crime is commonplace. Perhaps even growing up in a household with criminals. Crime might seem ordinary, and even necessary.

* Second-class treatment, both currently and individually (real and perceived), and historically towards group. This might contribute to an alienation from the social order.

* Thuggishness glamorized in popular media.

* Incompatible foreign values/culture, with insufficient assimilation. Similarly to how (I hate to use this example, but it's the best one that comes to mind) some of the more conservative Muslims have beliefs that are just plain incompatible with some US laws and prevalent culture, the US has a history of immigrants of various colors bringing criminal culture. Historically, I think the groups assimilate and mellow-out over time.

* Passionate temperaments, not balanced with the rationality that is crucial to modern civilization.

Compare our 45 or so murders this year with the 188 this year in Baltimore.

It seems to me that you do have a good understanding of what causes all the crime and all the shootings here in the Boston area (and, many other parts of the country, as well). Your points are spot on...and well-taken.

Interesting thoughts you have about what might contribute to a young man's impulsive decision to kill. However, if you want to hear specific reasons, you might want to sit in on the upcoming trial of Taquise Johnson, Jovon Adams's alleged co-conspirator.

I was on the jury for Jovon's case and there are just too many details that I believe you need to hear or see in order to understand what happened. And they are not as broad or as simple as the motivators you've mentioned.

The fact is the jury didn't consider all the reasonable doubt. It was clearly not a Joint Venture...JURORS, you all know that...But the justice system is messed up....Because if you can lock somebody away for false testimonies of liars, crackheads, and crooks, ignorant people living in poverty or depresssion and not by the physical evidence, thats just wrong...No physical evidence if anybody knows of any familiar cases please email me...This verdict was unfair and I was at the whole trial. Yes I am the mother of his youngest son and I will not rest until until my child's wondurful, loving, father comes home to his beautiful children
