Kid's going to have a lot of problems in the adult world

Mike Mennonno recounts a recent encounter outside the Boylston Street Filene's Basement with some youngish dude who demanded to know where the Apple Store was and, when he didn't like Mennonno's answer, turned into a complete asshole.

I once spent 5 minutes with a guy who was trying to get to Route 9, giving him directions. He had been headed southbound, and that hadn't worked out well for him- he was most of the way through JP, but despite that, he wouldn't believe me.

After patiently explaining to him exactly where to turn off Centre Street and giving him landmarks, he stared at me blankly and said, "Are you SURE it's not that direction?", pointing south.

"Yes, I'm sure. You're south of Route 9. You need to go NORTH. If you keep going south, you'll end up in Roslindale or Mattapan."

"OK, so how do I get there?" *sigh* *repeat directions*

Another blank state and pregnant pause where "awesome, thanks" and him driving off, should have been.

"Are you sure?"

"YES. I've lived here for years. I know how to get to Route 9, I commute that way EVERY SINGLE DAY."

"Okay, so I go up Centre Street and make a right..."

"NO! You go to Centre street. At the 7-11, you bear LEFT onto south huntington avenue. That will take you to Huntington avenue, which is Route 9!"

He stared at me blankly yet again, and I walked away...

The guy will make a fine republican strategist. Gee, I've asked for information and it doesn't coincide with my prior beliefs, therefore I'm not the problem!

I wouldn't put someone on the subway to get from the Back Bay Filene's Basement to the Apple Store. There's no point in getting on the Green Line at Berkeley Street only to get off two blocks away at Copley (Dartmouth).

Forgive me, but I would have gotten a little miffed at the answer, too. While the person asking did seem to be a bit overexcited, how difficult would it have been to give a little more info? I mean, tossing your head and muttering, "that way" was rather rude. If nothing else, a general, "three blocks up on your right" would have sufficed.

The kid obviously has been in Boston for longer then we give him credit for if he is already being rude to strangers lol.

In all seriousness "that way" with a bob of the head is a really really stupid answer. He could have said "head that way for a few blocks, its on this side of the street, you cant miss it, its a huge glass box." Who knows how many other people had given him directions to get to the point where he was now, how many other people bobbed their heads and said "that way" before the blogger. If you dont feel like dealing with them just do what I do and say "I have no clue, not from around here, sorry." It sounds rude but if Im in a hurry its too the point and gets them off my back, its better then just motioning off into the distance in the rain.

Pointing westward on the Boylston sidewalk is perfectly correct. Especially combined with "across from the Prudential Center" and "a few blocks" and "this side" [of the street].

It seems to me Mike gave him sufficient information and was very polite, all things considered. Just my two cents.

I agree. Sorry, if you don't like or believe the directions, say thank you and find someone else. There's no point in being rude or belligerent to someone who has taken the time to try to help you.

Mike's info was a little short, but at that point had the stupid kid just said "Sorry to be a pest, but is it actually on this street?", or, "do you happen to know what other stores it's near" things woudn't have devolved. The kid was a jerk.
