Honoring a veteran in her family

Eileen posts a copy of a letter her grandfather wrote to his parents at the end of World War II from Okinawa:

... Reading the letter, I was reminded of the grandfather I knew, the one who made friends with everyone he met and used to slip me dollar bills when I was a kid, and always had cookies hidden in his pockets. Aging is perhaps life's greatest tragedy, but it helps to remember what a long and happy life he's led.

that beautiful letter from your Grandfather. It makes me think of my Dad, who also went to war in the Pacific. How wonderful to see the values of those simpler times contrasted with how much he felt he had grown. Seeing war and the senseless death that comes with it, obviously left a mark on him, like everyone else. I hope kids who see this will remember all that was done for us by our Dads and GrandDads.
Happy Veterans Day!
