Remember banks named after Boston?

First National Bank of Boston

On the door of a night-deposit box at what is now a Bank of America branch on Centre Street in West Roxbury.

Comments

Same in Roslindale

Same door is (was?) on deposit door of BofA on Corinth in Roslindale, from back before it was Bank of America or Fleet Bank or BankBoston or (I guess) even Bank of Boston

First National Bank of Boston

at some point in the 1970s or 80s shortened its name to just "Bank of Boston", and stayed that way for a while until all the mergers started.

Other Local, Geographically-named banks of the past

here are the ones I remember during my time living here; there are probably many more:

The Boston Five Cents Savings Bank
The Provident Institution for Savings in the Town of Boston
Shawmut Bank
BayBank Harvard Trust, BayBank Middlesex, BayBank Norfolk, etc. etc.
South Boston Savings Bank
Dorchester Savings Bank
Charlestown Savings Bank (a favorite of college students in the 70s)
Cambridgeport Bank
Medford Savings Bank
Medford Cooperative Bank
Bank Five for Savings of Arlington
New England Merchants National Bank (later, Bank of New England)

Anyone want to add to this list?

EBSB!

Also Hyde Park Savings Bank.

not EBSB

I said "of the past." EBSB still appears to be very much alive.

Ah, you did say that

So I withdraw Hyde Park Savings Bank, too.

But add:

Blue Hill Credit Union, named for Blue Hill Avenue, and which followed the exodus of its Jewish customers and left the avenue and moved to Brookline and Framingham before getting bought out.

Other (long-gone) banks:

U. S. Trust

Suffolk Franklin Savings

Suffolk Franklin Savings Bank.
First National Bank of Boston.
