Remember when Boston cab companies got fare increases because of gas prices?

The Outraged Liberal's been wondering about that:

Now that gasoline prices have plummeted, shouldn't Boston taxi fares do the same? Yeah, I know, pretty stupid. Too much tryptophan-induced delirium I guess. But at the very least, shouldn't the increased rates only apply to cabs that don't have a "Check Engine" light illuminating the dashboard? ...

Come on now, we all know they're upgrading the fleet with Environmentally Friendly taxis, that's why they can't lower the fares. In fact that's also while they'll raise them again soon.

They're also raising fares

By Spatch | Tue, 12/02/2008 - 10:48am

They're also raising fares to pay for installing GPS units in cabs which the cabbies might rely on far too much. This actually happened the other night in the Davis Square Rite-Aid lot:

SPATCH: I'd like to get to the Elizabeth Peabody House on Winter Hill, please. That's on Broadway. Uh... here it is, the address is 277 Broadway.

DRIVER: Winter Hill? That's near Dorchester, right?

SPATCH: No, it's here in Somerville. It's on Broadway near Foss Park. 277 Broadway.

DRIVER: 277 Broadway? Okay.

(DRIVER begins to play with his GPS dashboard thingo.)

DRIVER: You sure that's the address?

SPATCH: Yeah.

DRIVER: I can't find it. This is in Somerville, right? I know very little Somerville. Davis Square I know, Mass Ave I know.

SPATCH: This is in Somerville. I can just give you directions to Broadway from here if you want.

DRIVER: No, let me find it.

SPATCH: Is the meter already running?

(DRIVER taps more on GPS thingo.)

DRIVER: It's not there.

SPATCH: That's odd. Well, try the corner of Broadway and McGrath Highway. That's roughly where we need to go.

(more tapping)

DRIVER: I can't find any of it.

SPATCH: Weird. Let me see.

(SPATCH notices that the DRIVER has entered "BRODWAY" into his GPS unit.)

SPATCH: All right, uh, let's start by going to Powderhouse. From where we are now, what you'll need to do is take College Ave up to Powderhouse Square.

DRIVER: Oh, we go up College? Sure, sure.

(DRIVER pulls away from the curb and happily begins to drive.)

SPATCH: Uh, you're going down the busway.

DRIVER: I'm going to College Avenue.

SPATCH: This is for T buses only.

DRIVER: But College is just up ahead.

SPATCH: I'm going to just slink down in my seat. You can wave and smile to the nice people staring at us.

Somerville is not big enough

Somerville is not big enough for a local cab driver to not know where Winter Hill is... 10 demerit points for him

pity there isn't something like The Knowledge required for people to be cabdrivers in the towns around here.

By ShadyMilkMan | Wed, 12/03/2008 - 9:20am

The UK method is a bit extreme, especially if you consider the fact that driving a taxi isnt all that profitable for a driver (maybe for the owner) to begin with, it wouldnt be worth it.

At the very least, all I ask is that the clock doesnt start ticking until the driver figures out where he is going. If he doesnt know how to get to Winter Hill, Porter Square, or any other major landmarks in the small city where he works shame on him let him eat the time.

Im waiting for the price of ice cream to drop. I was in the store the other day and it was 2 for 8 dollars for something like Edys and while I was thinking that seemed high for a sale of 2 1 gallon tubs of ice cream I realized that they werent even a gallon, they were like .75 gallons to boot.
