The Slowskies take the 9 bus

Karin reports her commute from South Boston to Copley Square took 40 minutes today. On a route that is, as she measured, 2.35 miles long. That represents an average speed of 3.5 m.p.h., which is roughly the speed at which the average person walks.

I can vouch.

On a good day it takes 45 minutes to make the the 4 mile trek from Packard's corner to Boylston (a average runner could beat the train).

On the slow days (more then 50%), between a hour and an hour and a half for that trip.

At that speed, and a (slow) average walking pace of 3-4mph, well, you just out walked the MBTA up commonwealth avenue.

It be funny if it wasn't so sad...

What is mbta's problem with eliminating some stops on the b line?

Their claim is that all of the stops get too much use to consolidate them into one stop. That is, if X people take M minutes to get off at BU West and Y people take N minutes to get off at St Paul, then X+Y at St. Paul alone would take more than M+N minutes to get off. That is their claim anyways. I find it dubious considering the results of having removed stupid stops like Summit Ave. Of course, I also find it stupid that they have stops on the red light approach sides of intersections (giving a higher probability that they'll be forced to stop for every red light whether it's green when they arrive or not). It's also stupid that they GAVE THE TRAINS STOP SIGNS at the crossing just past Harvard. It's also stupid that they haven't added signal preempting systems to all of Comm Ave (and even went out of their way to not install them on the C Line when Brookline added them for traffic and pedestrians while redoing all of Beacon St!).

There's more...oh, there's so much more...but, yes, they're stupid for not eliminating more stops through the BU area (Packard's Corner to Kenmore)...especially with all of the other service in that same exact area (57, BUShuttle...).

The 57 offers limited-stop service inside of Packard's Corner; it is only really useful for trips with at least one start- or endpoint beyond Packard's Corner.

That said I agree there are too many stops on the B line inside of Packard's Corner. Some of those stops (-glances at Blandford Street, BU-East, and BU-Central-) are ridiculously close.

The T discontinued that policy years ago. Sorry.

It's no longer true that the 57 runs limited service between Kenmore and Packard's Corner. It makes all stops in both directions, both picking up and discharging passengers.
