How much pizza can one neighborhood bear?

By adamg - 12/11/08 - 4:43 pm

The Bulletin does a pretty saucy story on plans by Upper Crust to open up on Centre Street. Pizza-place owners all along Centre Street are a bit cheesed off at having to share an ever shrinking slice of the local pie:

... "This isn't a fancy town like Brookline or a neighborhood like the South End," he said. "We have hard working middle class people here who aren't going to spend money on expensive pizza like theirs."

Well

Well if that's the case about middle class people, they shouldn't be worried.

BRING IT ON!

"This isn’t a fancy town like Brookline or a neighborhood like the South End," he said. "We have hard working middle class people here who aren’t going to spend money on expensive pizza like theirs."

- Nathaniel Ustayev’s, Christos Pizza

It's not the fancy (aka overpriced) pizza Nathaniel Ustayev ought to be worried about. It's the beer license. I love the way he provokes class warfare. After all, the place is called "Upper Crust" so why not?

I don't know what Upper Crust pizza tastes like nor have I been to Christos although I usually like Greek pizza. I have had Papa John's but not from the WR store (it sucked.) I do like DeNo and Tony's Special, it's a garbage pizza with everything on.

BUT I'll BE DAMNED if I'm going to patronize a fancy smancy upper class upper crust pizza joint... ... ... unless the pizza is ok and the beer is cold.

hmmm

OK, am I the only one not amazed by the pizza from Upper Crust. I don't know what all the hype is about...

No, you're not

I find nothing spectacular about Upper Crust. It's OK. Wait, wasn't there already a thread discussing pizza...?

Yep

What I found interesting about the Bulletin story was the quote about the hard-working middle-class burghers of West Roxbury, who, of course, wouldn't be caught dead in some fancy-shmancy beer-serving place like Bertucci's Upper Crust.

But, yeah, I could've just linked to the story from that original thread.

It's not good

I can't eat more than a slice or two before my jaw starts aching. It's too chewy. I hate Upper Crust.

I can only hope that this

I can only hope that this rapid expansion of what I believe to be the worst pizza I've ever tasted, goes the way of J. Bildner. Too much, too quick, and gone. Please.

Upper Crust is good, but not that good

I prefer plain thin crust Italian style pizza to the pastry-style Greek type most of the time.

The key is the sauce, and most pizzerias just go for the can.

I think Upper Crust is pretty good, but I don't think it's worth the $5 more per large pizza that it costs.

I hope they get a B&W and the other two also get a B&W also. There are a lot of storefront pizzerias, but not many where you can have a beer with your slice.

The owner of UC seems to be a great guy

I met him at city hall when he was going for his cafe license for the South End location. Nice energetic young guy, enthusiastic entrepreneur. The pizza is good but a bit expensive for my taste (I love my $10 large at Imperial), but nonetheless he was refreshing to meet.
