Somerville police find it hard to believe only one person hates yuppies

The Somerville News has the story behind the arrest of the "Kill a yuppie" graffiti sprayer:

... But Cutter could very well have had a partner or partners in crime. Police are still looking into who else may have played a role in the anti-yuppie graffiti. ...

hmm.. aren't all of us kind of yuppies these days?

Uh, no?

Unless "kind of" yuppie means "working poor."

so where does yuppie begin?

By Anonymous (not verified) | Wed, 10/19/2005 - 9:33am

so a single person under 40 making what, more than $35k? $40k? $45k? or would it be someone under 35 making $40k? what is working poor then, for a single person? 25? 30? remember, this is boston we're talking about, so expenses are some of the highest in the country.

Via urbandictionary.com:

Yuppie: "a very arrogant well put together young urban professional who you more than likely will find wearing gucci and prada with a large bank account which they love to brag about. You can find them drinking Starbucks, living in a one bedroom apartment in a city where they will pay 1000-2000 a month for and spending another 3000 a month on their credit cards. They brag about their designer clothes and love to flaunt them , as well as their wealth. They look down upon anyone who isnt as wealthy or high status as they are. Men are likely to be found wearing designer suits, gucci preferably with slicked back or well cut hair. The women will be wearing prada/gucci and fendi. The most arrogant concieted fucks on the planet."

Lol... Yeah.. I know some of those. :)

Yep...

I'd definitely agree with you that it's more in the attitude. I wouldn't consider someone who is young/middle class+/highly educated to be a yuppie if that person generally thinks and makes choices with social justice in mind.

I'd say that someone who is young and well off is not a yuppie if they thoughtfully donate to really needy charities (time as well as money, and to causes they really know about and care about) and spend their money in a way that frequently puts concern for others ahead of trendiness. A nonyuppie make a lot of money but only have one handbag, because, well, you don't need 8 of them, and most of the trendy ones are not fair-trade items, are exteremly overpriced and contribute only to corporate greed, and are often made of materials that are cruel and/or toxic. Not to say that having one consumer vice automatically makes someone a yuppie, but I think yuppies buy all kinds of crap they don't need and that's not good for the planet as a whole, just because it's what's expected of them in their circle. A nonyuppie might have just as much money, but not be part of a circle where they're expected to buy "the right" shoes and handbag.

It's all about what one considers the "right" brands, then, correct?

Sounds like the same sh!t to me, just a different decade.

Yep.

Exactly. The people who buy a pair of K-Swiss even though they don't fit their foot right because no one who's anyone is being seen wearing Skechers this week.

urban poor

By be (not verified) | Sat, 10/22/2005 - 12:40am

Well, since my take home equals my expenses, I'll just say that that's a pretty good definition of urban (or any other kind of) poor.

According to my (not Urban Dictionary) definition - anyone gullible enough to pay what people are paying now for what we call sh!tbox (descended from the original New England Saltbox) condos in addition to their new Saabs, volvoes or Subaru SUVs, not to mention the moveon.org bumperstickers (what does membership cost to that group?) qualifies as a yuppie. (Latest LLBean outerwear optional.)
