Can the Roche Bros. deli counter become even delier?
The Swellesley Report points us to this press release about Roche Bros. installing a sophisticated DeliVision system designed to make ordering stuff at the deli faster and funner than ever before, by letting you order at a self-serve kiosk rather than taking some Beetlejuice-like number.
Now, obsessive Roche Bros. customers are probably already scratching their heads, since the West Roxbury store has had a self-serve deli kiosk for several months now. And, to be honest, I can't really tell from the product sheet how DeliVision is superior to the current system, but with a name like DeliVision, it just has to be awesome. Well, there is one difference: DeliVision will let the store show ads to people ordering at the kiosk, rather than the simple, boring list of deli meats the current system provides. And who doesn't need more ads in their life? Especially when sliced up thin by DeliVision.

Can you specify that you
Can you specify that you want your order sliced on demand, or is this just for ordering the usual handfuls of pre-sliced stuff that they give you by default that seems to be dried out and/or spoil faster?
Yup - unacceptable.
Especially given prices.
How... 1960's of them
Makes me think of CreatureVision from weekend UHF TV. Especially after that Beetlejuice reference: deli numbers that were actually from a Beetlejuice dimension would be pretty cool.
It is a little nicer in terms of display features than some of the deli kiosks out there. And if the ads don't get in the way of actually ordering, that's OK. They give coupons, too!
More practical things would be nice: like a second ordering kiosk near the entrance to the store, so you can order as soon as you get there, and just stop by the deli on the way to the register. Even better, if you're going to pretend to be doing us consumers a big favor, make it available over the internet using our loyalty card.
The truly evil plan is much later on in the marketing literature - you didn't read far enough.
