Man sought for the murder of Daniel Yakovleff

Odegard
WANTED

Authorities are now hunting for Steven Odegard, 41, for the stabbing death of Daniel Yakovleff in Dorchester on Jan. 17.

Odegard, in whose bed Yakovleff was found, was indicted by a Suffolk Superior Court grand jury yesterday, District Attorney Dan Conley and Police Commissioner Ed Davis said in a statement, adding that, based on the evidence collected over the past ten months:

Odegard retrieved a knife from his own kitchen and stabbed Yakovleff multiple times, killing him.

Police went to Odegard's current Dorchester Avenue apartment this morning, but Odegard had already fled.

The week after Yakovleff's murder, Odegard's lawyer maintained his innocence - and pointed to an unknown third man allegedly in the apartment - in a Bay Windows interview.

Yakovleff was last seen alive leaving the Eagle Bar in the South End, where Odegard had picked him up.

Anybody who knows where Odegard is can contact Boston Police homicide investigators at 617-343-4470, the anonymous CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS or, via text message, by texting TIP to 27463.

In memory of Daniel Yakovleff.

Sam Baltrusis reports Odegard "has friends in Providence, Rhode Island and would go there often for support."

...and there's very little or no coverage of this on the local TV "news" shows (at least online). I wonder what he would have to be charged with to get on the main page of the stations' websites?

Jesus. Did you see what they led with on the evening news? The storm cleanup?

With hundreds of thousands of people still lacking electric power, roads impassible due to downed tree limbs, some folks still living in emergency shelters .... I think it makes sense to lead with that story. Frankly, it affects a lot more people.

Yeah, I can see leading with that, but from the looks of the rotating "top story" thingees on the Channel 4 and 5 Web sites, at least, they didn't play this story prominently, if at all (I say this not having actually watched the news, being on the way home from work and all, so maybe I missed it and they just forgot to post it online).

But come on: Crazed murderer evades police, now on the loose - that's not big news? Especially with the creepy photo? It's not like the DA and the police commissioner didn't release the news early enough in the day to make the evening news. Channel 25 managed to cover it

As a journalist and blogger who has covered this murder for the GLBT press since it happened in January, I feel deeply concerned that the local TV news stations have overlooked this story. While we have a snow storm on the way, we have a man who has been indicted in a horrific murder and he's on the run.

I've received e-mails from many, many locals who have expressed concern but Dan has family and friends in Connecticut, New Hampshire and as far away as Washington State wanting any information or updates to the investigation of this heinous crime. Daniel touched many lives. He was loved by many people. And they need closure.

However, as someone who has worked for both local and national TV news organizations, the unfortunate truth is that local news stations rarely cover stories unless it's picked up by the Associated Press. Kudos to Fox Channel 25 for actually getting out on the streets and covering this story.

Here, and with a link to Bay Windows coverage (give 4 props for grokking the linking thing).

not until 10:25 PM last night. I searched all four TV stations for the story before I made my earlier post. I emailed them all after I searched to see why the story wasn't being covered. They all have yet to responded. I'll assume that the story was underway at Channel 25 when I emailed them, so I'll upgrade them to D+.

On whether the "third man" had one arm.

Odegard, told police he had picked up two men at the Eagle and brought them back to his apartment. When he woke up the following morning, Odegard called police after finding one of them had been stabbed.
