Sleazy thug gets life for murdering Bible-studying cabbie

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today convicted Cleveland "Sleazy" Martin of first-degree murder for the death of Brookline cabbie Heureur Previlon in 2005, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Prosecutors successfully made the case that Martin and Jashawn Robinson - who is still awaiting trial - killed Previlon for his fare money on Aug. 25, 2005. The two made a point of calling a Brookline cab for a trip from Cleveland Circle to Monastery Road because they knew Brookline cabs did not have a partition between the passenger and driver's seats, unlike Boston cabs - and brought kitchen knives wrapped in alumnium foil so as not to leave fingerprints.

After being refused at least twice (by other cabbies due to the short trip), the men succeeded in getting a ride from Previlon, who took them from Cleveland Circle to a parking lot shared by St. Gabriel's Church and St. Elizabeth's Hospital. Once there, they stabbed Previlon to death before running to the nearby Jette Court residence of Martin's 16-year-old girlfriend.

Previlon drove a cab at night to support his family while training to become a minister.

"Heureur Previlon was a truly innocent victim, a man with only kindness in his heart, who paid the ultimate price for trusting the wrong men," DA Dan Conley said. "His case touched the hearts of police and prosecutors alike. We are very pleased with the verdict and we hope it brings some comfort to the family Mr. Previlon left behind."
