Shoveling for free

Jay Fitzgerald reports on the two guys wandering around his neighborhood with shovels:

... They were exchange students from Vietnam -- and they offered to help shovel the fluffy stuff for free. They had never seen or felt snow before. They just wanted to experience it. They helped shovel out the car, declined payment, and went on their awe-struck way afterward. ...

As an aside, I wonder how many kids still try to earn a few bucks shoveling? Anyone had any come to the door lately? Or, better yet, have you hired any?

Sure, we live in Rosi and after a good snow there are usually lots of kids wandering the streets with shovels offering to dig for cash (mostly 15-17 yo but sometimes younger). Usually I do my own shovelling but on a couple occasions I've been too busy (or injured) and had them shovel out my car plus the drive/walkways in front of our house and our elderly neighbors - $20 total for a job that takes two strong backs about 30 minutes. The kids have always been friendly and thorough.

I'm not made of money so I don't see this becoming a habit, but I have to admire any kid today that's willing to work up a sweat doing some honest labor.

I was finishing up a re-shoveling at my place Saturday evening, and was standing on my porch kicking my boots when a kid walked up and asked me "was that you shoveling a minute ago?"

An slightly odd question, so I slowly said "yes". He explained he was just wondering if I wanted any shoveling done, but unfortunately I was all set. First time that's happened in years.

I seemed to notice a decline in kids offering to shovel snow as snowblowers became more affordable.
