Death at Hyde Park station

Channel 4: Amtrak train kills one in Hyde Park.

When Cleary Squared heard the call on a scannner summoning a couple of fire companies down to the Hyde Park commuter-rail station, he headed down to see what was up:

... The Boston Police that were there spotted us from the Track 3 ramp and ordered us to move away. A few minutes later an officer taped up both the stairs and the ramps to both sides of Hyde Park Station to get rid of "gawkers". When he returned from his duty, the officer told the three of us, "Say a prayer." ...

Train approaching. Stand behind yellow line.

Sharon station has a sound system that repeatedly announces this message when a train is nearing the station. The system also puts the message on electronic signs on the appropriate platform. Does Hyde Park station have this system?

Yes. Hyde Park Station has

Yes. Hyde Park Station has the same signage and automated announcements (as the Acela goes through there). The tracks are also separated by a fence so you cannot cross them. There is absolutely no reason for someone to be on or near the tracks.

Only on Track #1 and Track #3

Since those two tracks drop off and pick up passengers, they do have the "Train Approaching" announcement. Track #2 is the "express" lane - hence Track #1 and #3 don't announce an oncoming train on Track #2.

"Train approaching" announcement is for non-stopping trains, too

At least it is in Sharon, where an Acela can really zoom by. It's actually more important for those trains.

And Readville

It's quite something to be standing right there when an Acela, or even a non-stopping commuter train, comes roaring through.

Those are provided by Amtrak

By Neal | Fri, 12/26/2008 - 12:47pm

And are at almost all stations along the Northeast Corridor and are activated when a train is approaching a platform adjacent track.

I have my tracks mixed up :-P You're right about the alerts :-)

By Cleary Squared | Fri, 12/26/2008 - 9:07pm

Track 1 is the outbound "express" track in the middle for MBTA trains and Amtrak/Acela. Track 2 is the inbound local stop for Hyde Park and both MBTA and Amtrak trains. Track 3 is the outbound local stop for Hyde Park, and isn't electrified yet, so only MBTA trains use it. Both Track 2 and 3 have the "train approaching" alert, while Track 1 does not.

Ever since they installed the Acela Regional and Acela Express trains, those alerts are required to let people know.

Track 3's announcements

The announcements on Track 3 don't work quite right. I wonder if that was a contributing factor.

I hear "Train Approaching" often as the train is leaving rather than arriving. It's become a running gag to me.

As soon as the train departs, it comes on XD

Yup...for those people coming late to the station, that's exactly what you hear as the train pulls away.

Correction: I don't have a scanner

We were having dinner at my grandfather's house when the call came in, and it was his scanner that I heard the call on.

suicide maybe?

Don't know for sure yet...

A lot of the details haven't been released yet, as Amtrak is still investigating.
