What's this world coming to when young lads can't shoot off pellet guns in their own apartment?

Boston Police report officers responded quickly to 137 St. Alphonsus St. on Mission Hill last night on calls about gunfire and two guys with what appeared to be a machine gun.

Police say they found a group of young people in a third-floor apartment with "multiple containers of alcohol including cases of beer and several gallons of hard liquor" - and four replica pellet guns.

Police say they arrested the four tenants on charges of being keepers of a disorderly house, procuring alcohol for a minor and being minors in possession of alcohol. At least three of the four list themselves as Wentworth students on their Facebook pages.

Innocent, etc.

I suspect that the "replica pellet guns" are Airsoft:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airsoft

The pellets are plastic (biodegradable ones are available), larger than BBs, and they generally can't break skin. You just don't want to get one in the eye or ear. The pellets will ricochet hard off many indoor surfaces.

Drinking and shooting off Airsoft guns at a party doesn't sound very bright, from a perspective of pellet safety. Alarming neighbors is also irresponsible. A situation in which police might mistake the Airsoft guns for real firearms is dangerous. These are all things that seem to be widely communicated and understood among Airsoft players.

I've heard some locales have considered banning Airsoft, and I wouldn't encourage such a ban here. After briefly owning an Airsoft pistol myself (doubles as a photo prop), I can say that target shooting with them indoors very quickly becomes boring. However, I'm sure that I, and most any other red-blooded American man, would have loved playing Airsoft wargames in the woods as a teenager. Airsoft seems like a relatively safe sport, so long as players have a culture of safety discipline. And any kind of self-discipline seems like a very good thing for teenagers to learn.

Underage college students, drinking alcohol.

I am flabbergasted. Absolutely dumb-struck. Bowled over.

What IS this world coming to?
