Which Hyde Park restaurant will open first?

The new Dottie's, which has a new owner who plans on actually using its beer and wine license (who knew it had one?), or C.F. Donovan's, which has been under construction for three years now.

I didnt even think of that, I know you were joking but that could be a possibility. Simply because its been my experience that when you get a beer/wine license you begin serving immediatly because they are so expensive to obtain and quite expensive to maintain as well. Its kind of like buying a brand new BMW then leaving it in your driveway while you run around in your Honda Civic.

I walked by Upper Crust in West Rox yesterday. They have the new glass storefront up and they're finishing the interior.

Have you seen any news on the Skara Grill the old Friendly's on Centre Street in West Roxbury?

Mmm, keftedes. The transformation of the old Friendly's on Centre Street in West Roxbury into the Skara Grill is now proceeding fast and furious.

In the meantime, I recommend Townsend's. Lots of goodies on tap (including Babysham and wheat beers for those weary of the cult of dark heavy beer), wonderful appetizers, main courses, and desserts (the truffle trio is a favorite, but you must have the Guiness brownie if you love chocolate).

I have no financial interest in the place, but I want it to survive. Otherwise it's back to the usual HP choices - pizza, burgers, fried chicken. It's a drag when you have someone in that you would like to take out and have to drive to the South End for good food.

I hope that the new Dottie's is a wiz, too.

You don't have to drive to the South End for good food. There is plenty, much closer to HP -- check out JP, West Rox, and Rozzy to start. I'll admit, it's really cool to take out of town guests to a good restaurant on foot, but a five minute drive ain't too bad, either.

could Donovan's just be a front for some other business?

I've never seen any activity going on in there beyond renovations. And, yes, they leave the outside lights on all the time.
