Alleged bus perv captured thanks to alert driver

Ed. note: It was a bus, not the Green Line as I erroneously stated initially.

McCantreports a driver on the 43 bus helped protect a woman from an alleged perv who rubbed against her on the bus and then followed her when she got off at Tremont Street.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office says Rayfield McCants pleaded innocent this morning in Boston Muncipal Court. Bail was set at $5,000.

Innocent, etc.

This is always excellent news. It's time for men to stop preying on women.

Of course it's great news that the criminal justice system was able to catch up with another alleged groper.
My question is what the hell is everyone else on the train doing as this poor woman is being harrassed from Park St. to Longwood (8 stops!)?!? Fair warning is hereby given: I ride that line everyday and I think that rendering some punk who is preying on a woman unable to move is legally defensible and would be an appropriate outlet for the frustration generated by riding the T. Those guys will get it first, then I will return my attention to the finding the so-called gentleman who refused (actually said "no, what the hell is wrong with you") to give up his seat to my pregnant (with twins) friend who was about to faint. He will be permitted to move, but will be so humiliated that he will not want to.

When asking people to give up seats, it's a lot more effective (and appropriate) to address a whole section of the train/bus and ask "is there anyone who can spare a seat for me/myfriend/thisguy?"

It's really pretty inappropriate to ask a specific person to stand up, because an individual shouldn't have to be put in the position of explaining that s/he has poor balance or is prone to dizziness or has a migraine or whatnot. If you ask an individual if s/he specifically is willing to get up, you're making the assumption that the person doesn't have a disability, which isn't your place.

The person you asked is pretty likely an asshole, but he might actually be a person with a disability who's sick of people on the T making assumptions and prying into his personal business, and who doesn't have an obligation to explain to you why he needs to sit.

This story seems to be garbled - according to boston.com, the incident took place on a nearly-empty #43 bus. (Unless McCants was involved in two separate groping incidents last night!)

I saw a brief release from the DA's office that mentioned Park Street and Longwood and, well, I blew it. Post is fixed to reflect reality.

Briefly, McCants allegedly approached the woman at Park Street and allegedly began bothering her there. She left the station and he allegedly followed suit. They boarded the Route 43 at different stops -- she at Park Street, he allegedly at Boylston. He definitely got arrested by Longwood Security, though.

so how did the medical area security folks get involved with this?

You don't have to keep saying "allegedly" if you just put "Innocent, etc." at the end of whatever you say just like Adam does in the initial post. ;)

This just in:

McCants allegedly approached the 29-year-old victim at Park Street station shortly after 11:00 and intentionally rubbed against her. When the woman left the station, McCants allegedly followed suit. She boarded the Route 43 bus outside the station; McCants allegedly boarded the same bus a short distance away at Boylston station.

Though the bus was nearly empty, McCants allegedly positioned himself right next to the victim and made a series of comments to her as the bus travelled southwest along its route.

When the driver observed the incident unfolding, he ordered McCants to move away from the woman. The woman left the bus at that point, but McCants followed her. The bus driver called for help and urged the woman to re-board the bus, which she did.

An MBTA inspector observed two Longwood Security officers and informed them of the situation. Those officers detained McCants until MBTA Transit Police officers arrived and placed McCants under arrest.
