Mayhem erupts in suburbs

Money exploded into the air in Medford today when two alleged bank robbers crashed their getaway car.

A man exploded in Salem yesterday, accusing his neighbor of being a flesh eater and then holding off police with a gun for several hours.

I asked my son, who attends school at one of the two schools that are along the river between Riverside Ave and Rt. 16/Meadow Glen Mall, if he heard anything about the bank robbery.

I got about 5-10 minutes of excited car chase play by play, weaving together accounts as told by various kids to other kids on the bus as observed from different vantage points in the complex. The kids were just beginning recess, and some of them climbed up the stairwells to get a better view of the chase down the highway on the other side of the river, and watch the police vehicles screech and squeal and speed their way through the access roads by the schools to head off the bandits. He even heard the resulting smash up from the playground.

Special bonus points: they hauled the wrecks through the school access road at bus time.

I'm surprised they weren't locked down at lunch over this: the complex contains a very large k-5 and every 6th-8th grade student in Medford - over a thousand students in all!

yeah. that's my commute home. i pulled onto 1A and was immediately diverted around the back to collins cove, no one was moving. traffic at a standstill. had WBZ radio mentioned that one should avoid the area, i would have gone around through peabody.

i called the radio station and asked what gives... and they told me what the deal was, but there was no mention of it on the traffic so i told them they REALLY SHOULD add that fact in.

and then the next traffic on the 3's the guy said "Salem New Hampshire."

i tried. i tried to help. honest.

took me forever to get outta there.

I'd get jumpy too if I had a flesh-eater living anywhere near me. Talk about extenuating circumstances!

Hmmm ... mites ... bacteria ... all over your skin!

Fortunately, they eat dead skin cells for the most part. To be honest, we'd all be in tough shape if they went away. Kind of like not getting the garbage picked up.
