It's a Catholic school. Why is anyone surprised or shocked?

It's a Catholic school with not all Catholic students. It might be disrespectful to some. Maybe they should take them down.

A Request
By Suldog - 2/12/09 - 3:04 pm
Good subject for debate, but can we please keep it friendly and not attack anyone for being religious or non-religious? I'd ask my fellow Christians to not proselytize in their remarks, and I'd ask non-Christians to remain similarly respectful of others feelings. Thanks!

Its a Catholic college, it makes perfect sense. They have a Jewish group, they have a GLBT group, they have been known to host Muslims. Now your going to tell them that because people who are not of the Catholic persuasion were allowed to go to the school they should not be able to put up a simple crucifix? Call me when they start kicking out non catholics and then I will protest...
Also I dont believe they force anything like not eating meat on Fridays during lent on its students. No forced ashes, no required church on Sundays. Many Jewish and Muslim groups that I know of require you to adhere to their dietary standards or only serve those items they deem fit in their cafeterias. I defend their right to do that and that is allot more intrusive into a persons life then a crucifix on the wall. Lets be honest if the symbol of Catholic Church that is so insulting to a student they really should not be going to that school.
I get your point, but not quite a parallel analogy

Jewish facilities aren't insisting that non-Jews adhere to their dietary standards. Kashrut rules are such that non-kosher food being brought into the facility renders the kitchen or cafeteria non-kosher, so then people who keep kosher are no longer able to eat until the whole place is rekashered. I don't think it's asking that much that a Jewish home or school or place of worship has guidelines so that people who keep kosher are able to keep kosher there.

Im not disagreeing with it, Im just saying its putting people out of their way and its ok, its part of the schools heritage and mission. The crucifix is the same way, its part of the heritage, history and mission of the school and its presence should not be a sign to others that they do not belong (in much the same way that the lack of bacon on my hamburger does not make me feel like I do not belong.)
Prevention of the Second Coming
By Kaz - 2/12/09 - 3:06 pm
I apologize to whichever comic I heard say this first (and better), but maybe BC is just trying to prevent Jesus from returning. I mean, who would want to come back here when we keep putting up all these reminders of the time he was tortured and killed?
That would be the late great Bill Hicks

You're welcome. This story also reminds me of a quote from another Bill, Bill Simmons of ESPN: "I love BC people - without them, everyone would want to move to Boston."
Aha!
By Kaz - 2/12/09 - 3:27 pm
Yes, thanks! It was part of the set he used when he "appeared" on Letterman just before he died. Dave just finally aired the deleted footage after asking Hicks' mother to come on the show so he could apologize to her.
Bill Hicks

In a form of apology, Letterman resurrected a 15-year-old routine Hicks did on the show, but never aired because Letterman cut it. The cross bit was part of it, and is one of the more memorable statements. Basically, do you really think Jesus would want to come back to Earth and see crosses everywhere? Not a good memory for him.

I demand they take down the American Flags at West Point!
That depends, are they expensive?
By Kaz - 2/12/09 - 3:34 pm
This guy just approached me on the street and said his name was Jehuda and asked me if I wanted any of the Brandeis mezuzahs he had lining the inside of his trenchcoat for a one time deal of $3000 each.
Just silly

This story is all over the news - you would think it was a slow news day. A Catholic school displaying Catholic symbols! Wow. Of course they should.

There were crosses in every classroom and in a lot of other places at Assumption College and I remember seeing them in Holy Cross buildings. Not sure why this is a problem.
Did they start with the math department?

Once those kids see that dude nailed to the plus sign, they will know that grading will be tough!
ha!

reminds me of my (jewish) cousin who attended a private catholic prep school - he was terrified of failing math!

Why Now? Pressure From Joe the Pope?
By Laurence Glavin (not verified) - 2/12/09 - 6:26 pm
Apparently many of these sectarian artifacts were introduced to the campus fairly recently. I understand that *Joe the Pope wants schools identified with that belief system to show more signs of its affiliation. *(I don't get this renaming of a guy just because he takes a job. For all the adulation of President Obama, he, and his predecessors didn't call themselves 'Cincinnatus XIV' or 'Junius three-to-the-cube-power'.)
