I just get an image in my head of men wandering around caves with their cocktails saying things like, "I really admire the use of harsh lighting in this shot and the way it conveys a sense of forboding."

To quote mid-1960's singer, Petula Clark:

It's the sign of the times, and therefore not so amazing. Popular culture has become more and more "el-cheapo", and much of what passes for art these days, be it art in itself, the movies, live theatre, etc., is a reflection of that. Plus, virtually nothing surprises me anymore.
