A great loss...
I spent many cold winter afternoons doing my homework and chewing on a Tasty sandwich and a coffee or frappe as I made the transition from high school to part time job. There was no place cozier than The Tasty. My daugher, who turned 21 today, also had the experience of many a cozy afternoon with her aunt at the Tasty, as well as with her mom. She was devastated when the Tasty was replaced by Abercrombie...and cheered when Abercrombie went away. However, the Square will never be the same without the haven that was THE TASTY!!!
and Elsie's!
I used to love the TD (Turkey DeLuxe). What is it now, a bank ATM?
Not to mention Buzzy's Roast Beef at Charles Circle, another "spot!"
now a Boloco
Most of what used to be Elsie's is now a Boloco.
Never ate at the Tasty
I think it closed shortly before I moved here. There was scaffolding covering that corner of Harvard Square at that time. Was the Tasty really as good as everyone says it was?
Yes
Not so much the food, which was what you'd expect from a good hole in the wall as the fact that, oh my God, here's this little hole in the wall in the middle of Harvard Square with the US map with pushpins from where all the customers were from, and the guy behind the counter and just, well, being able to squeeze in there.
And Open Late
The Tasty was also one of the few places where you could get a warm bite to eat late, late at night or early, early in the morning.
Buzzy's had a similar schedule and bigger portions, but the odds were higher that you'd wind up with half an inch of ash in your roast beef from the counterman's perpetually-dangling cigarette.
