The most popular elementary schools in Boston

This file contains maps and data given to the School Committee last week as it considered the proposed five-zone school-assignment plan. Page 12 shows the elementary (and middle) schools ranked by how sought after they are in the annual school lottery. Page 13 shows the locations of schools in such serious need of remedial help that the state has taken notice.

Limber up your neck before you look at the file, because, at least on my laptop, all the pages came out sideways.

Via Geeky Mama, who provides an easier to read list of elementary schools in the current West Zone (West Roxbury, Roslindale, Jamaica Plain and part of Roxbury) ranked by lottery popularity.

This data can be misleading if you don't keep in mind that schools are picked in two rounds.
First for schools with K1 spots (for four year-olds), and then for schools who start with K2 class rooms (for five year-olds). Because the lottery for the entry grades can determine the quality of your child's schooling for as long as ten years, almost all parents use both opportunities to enter the lottery.

This means that many more families are competing for K1 placements making the K1 schools seem more popular. The lottery for schools that start with K2 is smaller (All pre-schoolers minus those that got a desirable or needed K1 spot, minus all those families that couldn't face the school choice process one more time).
The map would be much more useful if it were based on the percentage of students applying for each school.

You should be able to just flip the file - at least you can on Adobe Reader 7.0.

Just download it and choose Rotate from View.

What threw me was I must've picked up a Firefox Acrobat plugin somewhere and there wasn't any toolbar in a normal Windows type sense. But right-clicking on the document does bring up a rotate option.
