Just because somebody hands you something on a stick doesn't mean you should eat it

Especially if you're a runner, as Dawn found out during a recent race, when a volunteer at the 6.5-mile mark gave her a Popsicle stick covered with what looked like gelatin:

... "Thanks!" I said with an equally friendly smile, and I put the entire wad of stuff in my mouth.

...at which point the entire table of volunteers began to scream. "no no NO! You don't EAT THAT!!!!" Because in fact what I had just put in my mouth was something called "Biofreeze." ...

It's great of you to post that about yourself. Very Funny. It reminded me of a friend who ran the Boston Marathon and it got very sunny, so he grabbed what he thought was sunscreen off of the table and smeared it all over his face. Too bad it was Ben Gay!! His face felt like it was on fire. He spent the next mile desperately trying to rub it off!

I love the nonchalant stop in the story (and race) to pose with goofy. Looks like she had a good time, goo aside of course.

So then what was the food energy "goo" everyone was talking about?

Just to set the record straight, this was from the 1/2 Marathon in Disney World last weekend on March 8th, not the 5K race yesterday in Southie.

Don't eat anything on race day you haven't had before.

And it's Gu (tm), pretty thick, very sweet, gooey stuff that generally has caffeine for a good kick. Good stuff if you're doing a multi-hour event, but definitely not stuff you want to have for the first time on race day. Vanilla bean flavor is pretty good. I took some once during a mt bike race on a hot day and I ended up barfing it up for the next half-hour... ;-)

Great story. I'm sure she feels pretty foolish, but sharing the story makes us all think about the idiotic things we've done. Thanks for sharing.

That sounds like the don't wear brand new sneakers on a long walk/run/jog rule! I made that mistake once, and only once.
