And state officials wonder why nobody trusts them

The Globe's Andrea Estes reports on the light-lifting job of Jim Aloisi's sister.

The fact that the rep whos

The fact that the rep whos office Alosi was in did not even know she still had a chief of staff, let alone never met Alosi is enough of a reason for heads to roll. What if Alosi had done something really stupid in this reps name, the former rep would have looked like an idiot.

Problem 1) She was "working" and bringing in check for nothing
Problem 2) She was "working" for someone who did not know her
Problem 3) She was "working" in an office that had no rep in it

Its bad enough people with connections get good jobs because of who they are but at least its tolerable if they actually do a good job.

words of wisdom tucked into end of story

Yes, this is the latest episode of abusing the public trust.

But at the very end of the article, I liked what Rep. Cheryl Coakley-Rivera had to say:

"There are people at the State House who work really hard and care about their jobs and the people they work for," she said, citing as an example her receptionist, who shows up "religiously every day" and then puts in a full shift at a hotel "to make ends meet."

"But there is another percentage who pretty much do nothing for a good portion of their workday and make very good salaries with benefits," said Coakley-Rivera, who now chairs the Joint Committee on Labor & Workforce Development. "That's why we need reform. We have to start cutting waste."

It was just one of those fair-minded, common-sense assessments, stripped of the usual hyperbole, that we don't hear enough in connection with Beacon Hill. I liked the way she put it.

You're worried about hyperbole? If she had said "and I want all the shirkers hunted down and fired" would that be hyperbole? Or should we take it for granted that these things go on at the State House and move on?

Sheesh...

I think you're twisting the meaning of what I said to make some snarky point. When I refer to the hyperbole, I meant either the unstinting praise for all our great public servants or the unconditional slam on all those crooks on the public payroll.
