Awesome!
Can't wait to bike back down there and get some strangely sized hot dogs. Last time I was there, a woman saw me snap a photo of my meal and proceeded to ask me about 30 questions...including whether I thought the picture of the hot dog would be "worth money" one day.
Oh my God, the dogs!
I know, you're talking about food, but:
I don't think I've ever seen so many dogs in one place as Castle Island today. There were conclaves of tiny little dustrags, bulldogs walking side by side, big dogs, little dogs, medium-sized dogs, it was like Go Dog, Go! come to life.
But you know what? Every single one of them was on a leash. For somebody used to the dog jungle that Millennium Park in West Roxbury's become, that was quite amazing all by itself.
Great walk
Castle Island (Google Maps: Fort Independence Park) is a nice walk that I bet a lot of people don't realize they can get to.
I've walked there from Savin Hill and from Cambridge. Looks like JFK/UMass would be a good T stop.
If you're going with little kids too heavy to carry, you might need a stroller, since there are parts where there's substantial walk before you get to a street where you can catch a cab.
Besides being a pleasant walk, you can bump into nice, approachable people. The last time I was there, we were looking at a memorial there when an older man came up. Turns out he had managed construction for much of the walkway. We had a great conversation, with him telling stories of the history of the place, of the hot dog stand, of old Irish vs. Italian dynamics, etc. He was also a charmer, and said of my date, "If I was 30 years younger, I'd fight ya for her," and made a mock jab at my shoulder.
