Jamaica Plain can no longer bank on farmer's market

Word reaches us that Bank of America has told Stillman's Farms it can't use the bank parking lot off Centre Street for its farmer's markets this year:

... So, we are searching for a new location to have our market as well as our CSA drop. This year we have some Hmong farmers joining the market, as well as some local bakers. We are holding out a little hope that the community of JP can persuade the bank to allow us to return. We encourage anyone who feels like it, to politely ask the bank to reconsider. We have always felt they were very generous in the past, so we are not sure what changed after all these years. Meanwhile, we will look for another location nearby. If you have any connections, or thoughts, please get back to us as soon as possible. Let's try to solve this together. ...

The market had taken place there for more than 10 years - dating back to Bank of Boston days.

...the parking lot on the corner of Centre and Orchard? It's owned by the office building across the street. It would be a great visible location near the Jway rotary and lots of room.

What about around Curtis Hall, if you want to keep it in the same area.

Or better yet, move it to the Blessed Sacrament site, which has tons of parking that I dont think is used during the weekend, and a parking lot across the street in a area with lots of housing coming online in the future (Blessed Sacrament and the Jackson Sq. Developments). This site is also closer to the T.

to locate a new site for the market, or so I am informed. In the meantime, if you want to send a polite note to BoA urging them to reconsider, go ahead.

That stinks that Bank of America might not allow the market to take place there, even though it's been there for 10 years. I wonder what the reasoning is behind the change.

But it sounds like this year's market is going to be even better if more farmers and some bakers start selling stuff.

It's unfortunate that BofA isn't willing to support Stillman's important contribution to making JP more sustainable - but in the meantime Prudential Unlimited Realty will be hosting Stillman's for the next few weeks.

I am sure that the parking lot behind Boomerangs and Galway House would let Stillmans have their market there. In fact, I think it would be even better as it would be bigger.

If HR 875 passes, we may not have Farmer's Markets to kick around anymore. It's going to do to Farmer's Markets what the CPSIA did to thrift stores and crafters.

Just handing over vegetables and stuff without the proper paperwork is inconsistent with Modernity, see.

Fresh local veg - coming soon to a black market near you.

How about the pyscho that splays out all sorts of crap on tables and the sidewalk in front of the BoA building?

I once stopped to take a picture of stuff sitting on the table, and she chased me down the street telling me it was "rude to take pictures without permission."

I just got an email news update from Genevieve at Stillman's Farm - they are BACK in the BoA parking lot after all. Here's the quote:

"Yippee!

"Bank of America had a change of heart and decided to let us stay! A thousand thanks to all who called and emailed us with support, and another thousand thanks to all who called, wrote and visited Bank of America. It is so amazing that a community can mobilize and actually still change something! As we have always said, JP and the surrounding area is such a great, dynamic community. Mr. Poole, the bank manager, has asked for us to sign a liability waiver. We carry our own insurance and we have verified with the other vendors that they carry their own insurance. He is still very concerned about the complaints he received about parking, but also agreed that parking was a problem every day. We thought it might help if folks who didn't absolutely have to park in the lot on Tuesdays or Saturdays could park elsewhere or walk. It seems like if the bank is losing 8 spaces, then we may be able to diminish the pressure on the days we are there. Saturday is less of an issue after 12, as the bank is closed. In closing, I could not begin to thank all who were so quick to respond and so helpful in resolving this issue, but when I think about how quickly the Mayor's office was to get on this, I want to cry. Thanks Jim and Colleen! Also all the business owners and organizations along Centre St. have been so supportive and solicitous. OK, I'm stopping there, but, 'You like me, right now, you like me.'"
