Ramp backup

This was originally a link to a cool photo of a pedestrian ramp on the Mass. Ave. bridge, but the photographer took the photo down. Oh, well, but it was cool.

That ramp is great

It can get heavy pedestrian/jogger traffic (and, unofficially, bike and rollerblade traffic), and some people will stop halfway up to look at the river and take photos. Yet, in my experience, it operates smoothly.

In the olden days ...

There was a stairwell where the ramp was. It wasn't too bad for those of us then-youngsters to haul a bike up it as it was a straight shot, but it prevented people on wheels - strollers, chair users - from getting up and down to the bridge.

One day, when I had carried my bike down and was about to get on, a chair racer asked if I could haul his chair up. I locked my bike and he wheeled over to the front of the stair case. With massive arms, he hauled himself out of the chair using the railings and used his arms to "walk" up the hand rails all the way to the top while I carried the lightweight chair up behind him.

Needless to say, I was impressed. The effort to carry the chair was worth the performance.
