Their first restaurant will
Their first restaurant will be rapturously received, and the following will build a steady cult, but by the eighth or so, people will say they're just repeating themselves, and that their influence on the local burger scene is overrated by burger journos and fans alike.
You mean?
They'll be the Krispy Kreme of Boston-area burgers?
Or the Pixies of hamburgers.
Or the Pixies of hamburgers. Depends on who writes the history.
That's my worry
Sonic expanding into New England is indeed a Kool Thing but they better take it slow and not flame out like Krispy Kreme did, causing a Teenage Riot among other things and ok I got nothin
Correct
100%
Sonic is less cult and more
Sonic is less cult and more substance than KK. KK's entire value is glazed doughnuts served hot, if they're not hot they are like cardboard. Sonic serves a wider range of what generally passes for food and it's pretty good stuff for its category.
Bigger question: When will Hardee's reach our shores?
At least we'll have a reason
At least we'll have a reason to watch all their commercials.
History Repeats Itself?
Drive-in burger joints?
Anyone old enough to remember Arty Johnson's on RT1 in Norwood? It stood near where the Burger King is now at RT 1 and Everett St.
Think of the Happy Days series with burgers, in car eating, and the hot rods that raced up and down the road.
A bygone era for sure, and I cannot for the life of me think of any NIMBY Boston neighborhood that would be willing to admit such a place. Look at the hoop jumps Wendy's went through on American Legion Highway.
After they were burned out on Rt 1 in West Roxbury decades ago their next target spot was the old gas station in Rossie Square next to the library. Neighbors said no and that eyesore stood for another decade (soon to eventually be demolished and turned into a small office building thankfully.)
Sonic? Any relation to the hedgehog? :-)
About time...
...that we get a better variety of fast food around here. May they find their way into Allston-Brighton.
They really want to do us a fast food favor
open more Popeye's! Try and park at the one in Kenmore!
Popeye's Chicken, mmm good
Fast food of the gods. The spicy fried chicken, the dirty rice, the buttermilk biscuits. (With a frequent buyer's card that entitles you to a free bypass after every 10th meal.)
Yikers, I'm trying to cut red meat and poultry from my diet. It's not good for me to even think about this.
There used to be more Popeye's
They were never huge in this area, but they did at one time have 6 or 7 locations, including Kenmore Square (on the north side back then), Central Square (converted from a Church's Fried Chicken), and Porter Square (in the shopping center). Then they all closed, and Popeye's didn't return to Kenmore for at least a decade.
Oh, if we're going to count old Popeye's
There was one in the Arsenal Mall in Watertown and one in the Framingham rest area on the turnpike.
The Popeyes Fried Chicken / Jane Swift connection?
Popeye’s is the best!
I am convinced that when the Framingham turnpike Popeye’s was closed as part of a mass conversion of all turnpike rest stops to McDumps that occurred during the acting governorship of Jane Swift.
Although she might have flown over it once or twice, I am sure that it was not her decision to remove the only Popeyes on the Mass turnpike - but I can't help seeing the correlation between the closing of that Popeye’s and the usurpation of the Swift campaign by the Mittster.
Not all Popeye’s are created equally. The Kenmore square location is excellent! However, the Popeye’s in the Westgate mall is mediocre, tasting greasy.
For Dennis K, or anyone else who knew Art Johnsons – “Eat Art’s” (the sign on route 1)
When we head down east ...
We always plan to eat at the Popeye's on the Maine Turnpike. We can get the kids to be quiet about being hungry and not stopping here or there if we just say that magic word ... Popeyes!
Boston?
Hmmm. what to do in Boston. a walk-up only Sonic?? :)
Happened to In & Out Burger
Here in SF the drive thru option was eliminated. One must walk into the In & Out location to be served. Admittedly it's in the crowded Fisherman's Wharf area so a drive thru with parking is not even possible. Trouble is, that's what In & Out is all about. Plus getting eating-in-the-car placemats and the 'secret' menu.
Our Bean Counters Like that One
I convinced a group of people to try it when we had a big meeting a a Fisherman's Wharf hotel. Our financial people were in utter disbelief ... $35 for FOUR people ... TOGETHER? In San Francisco???
