Why Mitt Romney might not want to keep bashing the French

Not because he knows he's just throwing red-meat to the wingnuts, but because somebody might dig up the fact that, if anything, he's way Frenchier than John Kerry, because he actually lived there for several years. Adam thoughtfully tells us:

... Tread carefully, Mitt! After all, France made you the man you are today. Remember the Vietnam War? Not firsthand, since you spent most of 1966, '67, and '68 as a Mormon missionary (complete with draft deferment) in the land of Napoleon and de Gaulle. ...

That says Romney actually has experience with what he's talking about. Why does that count against him? Are only people who have never set foot inside France qualified to have opinions about it?

No, but ...

You might recall that last year, one issue raised against Kerry was that he was too "French." Imagine if he'd actually spent a long period of time in France. Oh, but wait, this is a Republican we're talking about. It's OK then.

No, I don't recall what Romney said about Kerry's being too French. Perhaps you could document a quote? A Web search discloses a couple of similar smears against Romney, mentioning a "whispering campaign" that Kerry was too French, and implying without evidence that Romney was behind it. However, I can't find a single actual quote from him to that effect. Find me one and I might believe you.

The notion that being in a country somehow taints a person is disgusting. Such a smear does not, whatever you think, become "OK" just because you're talking about a Republican.

Also, being a missionary in a country does not constitute an endorsement of that country. The whole point of being a missionary is to "enlighten" the natives. Missionaries go to some very repressive countries; their presence doesn't constitute an endorsement of the country's policies.
