That's nowhere near as bad as the people who go to a movie they KNOW is sold-out (e.g. a Harry Potter premier night showing) and leave one seat between them and the people already sitting in that row.

It inevitably leads to couples asking half the row to shift down a spot. to free up two seats next to each other.

On the other hand, what are they doing showing up 20 seconds before the movie starts knowing the place is sold out?

I just climb into the window seat if it's empty and there aren't any aisle seats available. But then I'm small, so this is easy for me to do.

I love how they say 'quality kids debate'.

So some people like the outside seat. You can ask them to move, or to let you pass through. Of course, that is annoying sometimes.

I could undstand this if they carried a diesiese, or were the size of Russia, but is there really a problem with sitting next to someone.

The real problem is blocking the dorway. I was getting on the green line which has some platforms that are 3 feet wide. There was a big group getting off, and i was the only person getting on but no one would try to let me by. I had push through, but i didn't care cause i needed to get on that train.

Hm.. I usually stand rather than sit in the outside seat on a double-seat row, but prior to sitting anywhere on the MBTA I consider: "Do I want a stranger blocking me in, leaning their massive bag against my boob, breathing what must be a mixture of cigarettes, garlic bread and ass in my face, leaning on me each time the bus/train makes a turn, blabbing loudly on their cellphone in my ear on what will undoubtedly already be an unpleasant MBTA trip? Not so much." Hence, sitting on the outside seat with easy access to an escape route and leaving the inner one empty..

Plus in theaters, when there are open seats and you sit right next to some stranger and leave the other seats empty, people tend to think you're a weirdo with no sense of personal space....

not everybody is as obnoxious as the person you described. Theres this attitude in Boston that "everyone is a bad person but me".
