May 4 + 60 days

would put the last day of the Globe around Friday, July 3 -- right before the holiday.

Some flexibility seems to exist in this law, however. The Tucson Citizen was supposed to close on March 21 but remains alive while the owner evaluates bids from two prospective buyers.

The fact that they're even

The fact that they're even threatening WARN paperwork means the clock's ticking. It sounds to me an awful lot like the Times is about to push the Globe into the penultimate stage of newspaper heat-death: putting it up for sale. If they put a time limit on the sale, as in if it doesn't sell in six months we're shutting it down, well, then, when the time limit's up goodbye Globe.
