DA: Brazilian fists of fury leave one man in coma

A trio of martial-arts pros from Brazil face charges they beat one man into a coma and broke another man's jaw during a fight outside a Chelsea restaurant early this morning.

Bruno DaCosta, 23, of Everett, Iury Debs, 25, of Lynn, and Diego Santos, 23, of Everett, were all ordered to surrender their passports at their arraignment today in Chelsea District Court, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office says. Bail was set at $2,500 each.

All three are instructors at the Brazilian Martial Arts Center in Somerville, which promises "ultimate training for ultimate fighters."

Prosecutors charge the three put their training to bad use at a fight outside the McDonald's on Revere Beach Parkway, which they say followed a verbal altercation shortly before at Club Lido in Revere.

Witnesses told investigators that Santos struck one of the victims, a 22-year-old Revere man, in the face with no provocation, knocking him to the ground. When another man, also a Revere resident, approached the assailants, Debs allegedly punched him in the back of the head and knocked him to the ground. All three assailants kicked and slapped the two victims as they lay on the ground.

Friends of the first victim rushed him to Whidden Memorial Hospital, where doctors ordered him transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for surgery. He was operated upon and placed in an intensive care unit with severe head trauma and possible brain damage.

Innocent, etc.

Very sad that someone is

Very sad that someone is injured. I hope that he recovers fully and quickly.

I'll wait for more details in this case. One generally doesn't get as accomplished as Santos appears to be, without some self-discipline. If he indeed was an aggressor, or he didn't minimize his use of force in defense, then I'd like to understand why.

Update: Or perhaps he did not use any force, or not the force alleged. I should know better than to assume.

From what we know so far, the exact cause of the serious trauma to the first victim's head is believed to be its impact with the pavement, not the actual punch that preceded it. Witness accounts thus far do make the defendants the aggressors, though.

UFC wanabees dumb and with a temper.

No, that could never be the case.

One person was beaten so

One person was beaten so severely that
he is in a coma;the bail for all three is $2,500;
this is a sitire piece from the Onion?

these individuals are also flight risks;that
alone deems a much more significant bail, but
beating someone resulting in a coma;bail
should have been suspended alltogether.
If it was applied-$2,000,000 bail.

Prosecutors recommended

Prosecutors recommended $50,000 cash bail for each defendant.

I love the fact that the DA's spokesman reads UH and responds to comments. That's very helpful public service!

WOW his comments make so much more sense now! Im always amazed at how some offices are so tech savy and others are not...

I unfortunately know these idiot aggressors personally. They love to pick street fights and fight in night clubs. None of them is successfull as a pro mma fighter, so they have to take their frustrations on untrainned individuals. The gym they train at also encourages this kind of behavior.
Too bad their bail was so low. That is a joke! Idiots like this give the sport of MMA and their native country a bad rep. These people are a disgrace to Brazil and to MMA!

Why do people usually post

By neilv - 5/5/09 - 11:09 pm

Why do people usually post these slams against accused or victim *anonymously*?

It's easy to create an account and put your name behind what you say. Putting your name behind it also lends more credibility to what very well might be accurate statements.

Two plus two

By Sock_Puppet - 5/6/09 - 3:52 am

Anon knows these guys personally. Which means they would recognize his name if he posted it.

And they like to pick fights and beat people up.

Can you get to four?

I thought of that, and I

I thought of that, and I wanted to see what anon would say.

But mostly, it was rhetorical. The drive-by anonymous bashing is not uncommon on UH.

Normally Im one of the first

By ShadyMilkMan - 5/6/09 - 5:36 am

Normally Im one of the first people to call out the anons... but considering that these guys "allegedly" beat the tar out of some guy who is now in a coma I can understand why he wouldnt want to place his name next to a critical post. Most respectable martial arts studios push the concept not using your skills outside of the studio/arena which is probably why you do not see many stories in the news about karate black belts whooping people at the local IHOP (Im sure if happens but considering how many people take karate over these ultimate fighting classes it does not happen all that often.) I would be interested in seeing if the City of Somerville investigates this facility.

I think this particular case

By neilv - 5/6/09 - 10:01 pm

I think this particular case was a poor time for me to try to make my usual stand against anonymous personal attacks. That's my mistake.

I still don't think the UH drive-by is appropriate. It has a lot of potential for abuse and wrongful harm, and we have authorities (law enforcement, social services, inspectional/licensing/permitting, etc.) for investigating properly reported problems.

I know these guys personally

I went to school with all of these kids and actually they are very good kids! they dont go out and pick trouble and actually you can check their record and you will see that they are clean and on the other hand, these guys that supposely was in coma have a record. so before you judge, please meet these guys. They are all nice kids and they all come from a VERY GOOD family!
