MBTA tries to get Alewife signs just right - again
By adamg on Wed, 05/06/2009 - 2:52pm
Boblothrope reports workers were busy replacing platform signs at Alewife station this morning - for like the fourth time in 16 months:
... The crew included no less than *four* supervisors, who stood around on the mezzanine level chatting.
I didn't notice any functional difference between the old signs and the new ones. They weren't just sticking on new graphics -- they were replacing the entire metal panels. ...
Apparently, Alewife is a testbed for new signage ideas for the rest of the T system.

It's a union shop
Are you surprised that people were standing around doing nothing?
A government employee union, too!
Fonts
I noticed several instances at Alewife where the fonts are different from that pleasant normal one in every other station. It reminds me at first of an 80's dot-matrix printer.
It's Eurostile
Lovely font, but questionable for signage
Alewife doesn't need many signs
Alewife is my 'home' station and I'm puzzled by the need for so many signs. All paths lead from the train area to the bus area, except for the elevator to the garage.
"All" except for...
... the other exit that leads to Russell Field, lots of homes, and the only bus that goes through Cambridge.
Speaking of MBTA signage
Speaking of MBTA signage hijinx, has anyone ever noticed how signs referring to the Mattapan High Speed Line at Ashmont Station have the word 'Trolley' affixed to the signs with some kind of adhesive material? As if to cover up a mis-spelt 'Trolly'? I think I've seen evidence of this cover-up at Government Center as well. Gotta love it.
It's not your imagination, the T
did indeed install a bunch of signs at various Green Line stations about two years ago with directions to 'use any trolly except E to get to Fenway Park'.
Most have since been replaced with the "Charlie in the Red Sox uniform" graphic signs.
