Oval outrage in Readville

Demand a change!

Somebody is so upset that Hyde Park and Readville don't have blue oval signs reminding us Thomas M. Menino is still mayor that they printed up a bunch of post cards and left a stack at the Hyde Park post office, so you could mail all your friends to get them to join you in demanding action now.

It's just not fair: West Roxbury has one?!?

No Hyde Pride here

That's a strange oversight

By jchristian | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 1:06pm

I can see not having a Readville (no offense) since I think it's technically a neighborhood of a neighborhood (HP) and i don't know how consistently they highlight those city-wide...
but no Hyde Park is strange.

Especially since the mayor

By ShadyMilkMan | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 1:10pm

Especially since the mayor has lived in that part of town as mayor for almost two decades, and as a councilor (and president) before he became mayor

If Morton Street Village ...

By adamg | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 1:14pm

Which is roughly two blocks of stores, can get one, then surely Readville can.

But given what's going on in the city these days, it seems like a weird thing to obsess about.

Of course, it's easy for me to talk: My neighborhood has one of those signs, surrounded by pretty flowers, and the fact that the flowers would be even prettier without some big blue ovoid lording it over them is probably just proof I can whine about anything, I suppose.

Ovoid?

By Stevil | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 1:19pm

Is that the empty space in the middle of the O?

It's what a mathematician says when he gets bad news

By adamg | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 1:23pm

You know, I heard the news today, ovoid ...

And if it's a Jewish mathemetician?

By Stevil | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 1:29pm

Do they say "You know, I heard the news today, oyvoid..."

Sorry slow day at the office - need a few chuckles - and thanks to Kaz maybe a few munchkins now!

Nope

By Kaz | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 1:23pm

That's a Munchkin.

Mmmmmmm, Munchkins...

I live in an area that is

By ShadyMilkMan | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 1:38pm

I live in an area that is smaller then many of the communities in question so I can understand the want for a sign that announces your in a new area. We have signs at every major road that comes into the city, and it helps when Im giving directions that I can say "when you enter..." at least they will know when that happens. Of course, like many cities up here, were smart enough to not put the mayors name on the sign! Its so wasteful that Governors and Mayors of big cities put their names on signs like that, it just means every single sign in the city needs to be changed in the event the mayor loses the next election.

Bright side

By Sock_Puppet | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 1:47pm

So that's one way in which Boston wastes less money than other cities. Up here, the mayors outlive the signs.

How about starting with

By Jiffywoob | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 2:18pm

putting signs up marking the streets?

Wait...

By Will LaTulippe | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 2:47pm

...people want to be reminded that Thomas Menino is mayor? Why?

Auduban Circle has a blue

By anon (not verified) | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 3:14pm

Auduban Circle has a blue oval, even though it's, what? The last two blocks of Beacon Street before Brookline takes over?

Allston and Brighton, on the other hand, have no blue ovals I'm aware of.

Brighton has at least one

By BC, when you come in via comm. ave from Newton.

They also have metal birds

By J | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 4:52pm

They also have metal birds on the streetlights, but those were paid for by the residents. Perhaps the blue sign was too. The old ladies there seem extremely proud of their circle (which fortunately will soon be a standard intersection)

The perfectly good reason

By NotWhitey | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 3:46pm

This has already been discussed in the Hyde Park free advertiser newspaper. When the money was available to put up these signs, it was a one-time thing. The Hyde Park community group that was involved chose to spend the money on fixing up a small corner of Cleary square - benches, etc. They decided that building something was more important than putting up a sign. So now, a few years later, people want a sign. Sorry, too late.

Benches vs. signs

By adamg | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 3:51pm

Yay, common sense! I'll take benches any day. You mean that little concrete plaza by the post office?

Hyde pride

By adamg | Mon, 05/11/2009 - 3:56pm

I don't know how I missed the story, but here's the Bulletin report from a couple weeks back. The city says Hyde Park could yet get its sign - as part of a proposed $2-million overhaul of Cleary Square.

Of course, that could cause issues because some people would rather see the sign somewhere other than Cleary Square.

Snarky on purpose, don't be too offended.

Oh, please.

The South End actually gets tourism, is filthy rich, and has political connections and we don't even have one of those stupid DNC-era Blue signs.

Don't tell me it's for lack of self importance. ;)
