Variation on the "now approaching" announcement
By roadman on Mon, 05/11/2009 - 7:48pm
As I was exiting North Station subway earlier this evening, the following announcement came over the PA:
"Attention Orange Line Passengers. The next train to Forest Hills is now approaching. It will not admit customers. Please stand behind the yellow line."
Leave it to the MBTA to turn something as simple as "The next train is not stopping" into a long-winded phrase that makes passengers say "Huh?!?"
Almost as bad as when the (insert your favorite radio station here) traffic reporters say "The accident is now in the clearing stages".

The MBTA will not admit customers
... should be considered worthy of appropriate communication and service.
Remember: Safety is our #1 Priority ... Customer Service comes in around #4500.
What's the big deal?
This post is far from worthwhile and should go away. People, like the blind, don't always know where the next train is coming from. That's why the announcement is specific about where the train is coming from.
The T has its problems, but this is far from part of it.
There are safety, service,
There are safety, service, and PR implications of announcements like that. The decision should be based on human factors expertise and studies. The studies can actually be interesting and surprising. Or perhaps the decision was more ad-hoc in this case.
What this post is missing is a response from the MBTA. The rationale for the current message might be more interesting than you'd think.
