Orange Line to slowly get up to speed this week

The MBTA says a bad circuit board in the Orange Line's signaling system between Downtown Crossing and Oak Grove are to blame for delays in recent days - in which trains have been limited to 15 m.p.h. and manually directed between stations, with only one train allowed in either direction.

The T says the signals are now working between Downtown Crossing and North Station and expects to have the entire line back to normal operation by Sunday.

According to T spokesman Joe Pesaturo:

The MBTA's Signal Department found a defect in one of the electronic circuit boards used in the Orange Line Signal System from Downtown Crossing to Oak Grove. These boards are used in the control locations on this section of the Orange Line. The MBTA and the manufacturer of this equipment currently are implementing a corrective action plan. ... MBTA Signal staff is working around the clock at the remaining equipment locations that are still affected. As each location is cleared, the manual oversight will be replaced by [automatic train operation] and the delays will be reduced. We anticipate daily improvement until the corrective action plan is completed.

Okay, so it's not the worst bureaucratic lingo I've heard (and having worked in both government and academe, I've heard a lot of it). But please, don't dress up the fact that it's taking you more than a week to fix it.

From Joe Pesaturo:

The circuit board in question was installed as part of the recent Signal upgrade project (commonly referred to as the Haymarket North project). While only one board was identified as having this problem, each board installed under this project is being inspected, and if any corrections are warranted, the contractor (JF White) will take care of it. The contractor will be held financially responsible for any and all costs associated with repairs/replacements. The signal manufacturer responsible for supplying the boards is Alstom Signaling. They are the sub-contractor to JF White.

Some Assembly Required reports his hellacious commute this morning, adding:

The level of suck on the Orange Line is reaching epic proportions.

from their web page shortly after this thread was started. They have since posted a new alert on the page indicating 5 to 10 minute delays Oak Grove to North Station account signal problems.

Yeah instead of keeping up the alert they keep taking it down and then putting it back up sometime during rush hour.

Just to add... they like to post the alerts at the most randomness times too if at all. Like when I went to Malden Center Station today to find out there was two T employees who were blocking off the elevator and escalator. Was there an alert on the MBTA website. Nope. However I was rudely made fun of for not being able to take the stairs with my bum knee in a brace.
