Icarus falls to earth

Prominent restaurants are dropping like flies now. Boston Food and Whine reports Icarus, a South End landmark, is closing forever on July 1, partly because of the economy, partly so owner Chris Douglass can concentrate on his two restaurants in Dorchester.

We'll miss Icarus, but...
Icarus is a truly great restaurant, but unsustainable at those prices. Barbara and I would go once a year for a special occasion, usually our anniversary. Except during Restaurant Week, it's too expensive to go more often than that. But as a resident of the Shawmut Valley neighborhood of Dorchester, adjacent to Ashmont, I am happy to have Chris concentrating on Tavolo and especially on the Ashmont Grill, where we eat two or three times a month. Check out their Monday Wine Club; we get four smallish courses (actually, they're of adequate size and are always delicious), along with lots of good wines and great company, all for $30 per person. Can't beat that!
