Babies, ribbons and politicians in West Roxbury

Tom Menino cuts a ribbon in front of Pazzo Books along with City Councilor John Connolly and one of Pazzo's Nealon brothers.
Random notes on Tom Menino's ribbbon-cutting march along Centre Street in West Roxbury today:
As I explained to the kidlet as we waited outside Macy's to watch the mayor cut the ribbon to celebrate Macy's remodeling and new sign, cutting ribbons is just one of the things a mayor does. It's in his contract.

Scissors Guy displays
proper technique for
handing someone scissors.
The mayor had a designated golden-scissors holder, an aide whose sole job was to hold the large golden scissors as the mayor walked from place to place. I guess it makes sense: If somebody trips while walking with a large pair of golden scissors, better some aide than the mayor.
Menino was accompanied by city councilors John Tobin and John Connolly, which was not surprising given that Tobin represents West Roxbury and Connolly is from there. It was a little surprising, though, to see at-large candidate Ayanna Pressley walking the route. Does the mayor have a slate for the city-council race?
Hey, the kidlet and I knew the guy slowly driving the mayor's Tahoe (a hybrid Tahoe, that is), behind the entourage. Despite that, we did not wave to him and now I feel guilty. We did not know the police officer who was also following the entourage in her cruiser.
The official reason for the walk was to help celebrate all the new stores and restaurants that have opened over the past few months, or are about to open along Centre Street. It's actually a very impressive number.
Channel 4 was there, apparently to do something about how cool West Roxbury is (don't get us started). The cameraman thought these girls outside the Real Deal were pretty cool:

Pressley makes a point with John Connolly:

OK, anybody know who this guy is? He was the only one on the walk wearing a tie.

Meanwhile, Sam Yoon was at a guacamole taste-off in East Boston.

Ribbon Cutter
Since when did showing up for ribbon cutting and work in general become a metric for success... We all work with people who show up and wish they would stay home.. Boston voters deserve better then a professional ribbon cutter. Time for voters, press and everyone else to look at this Mayors Record over the last 16 years and ask if you deserve better. Our expectations have been lowered so much that we believe if someone cuts a ribbon he is a great Mayor.
We need a strong leader.. Not a ribbon cutter..
Who said anything about a metric for success?
Politicians cut ribbons. It's what they do. I didn't hear anybody yesterday waxing poetic about Menino's skills with a pair of scissors; I suspect people who vote for him will do so for other reasons.
I suspect it won't be for
his leadership with that 6 AM bike ride. Hizzonah may want to consider Jenny Craig.
The unidentified man is Tom
The unidentified man is Tom Dougherty, president of West Roxbury Main Streets and overall great neighborhood guy.
Don't read too much into Ayanna Pressley's presence as a sign of mayoral support. Usually candidates will tag along at these events for the exposure. Good move for her to spend a day in the city's highest voting neighborhood.
Channel 4's report
Here.
Couple of notes: It's CentRE Street. And while there were a bunch of ribbon cuttings yesterday, not all the stores are really new. A couple of those businesses - the seafood place and Pazzo Books - have actually been open for several months now. And one of them - Macy's - has actually been open for, gosh, several decades now. But they do have a new sign.
