Why Tom Menino deserves four more years

Ross Levanto explains why he'll be filling in an oval for Tom Menino again this fall:

... I am supporting the Mayor because I really do not have much to complain about. I have attempted to contribute to my neighborhood over the past several years to clean the streets, provide my input on an agreement with a local university, and to debate the merits of additional liquor licenses. I played a minor role with my neighbors creating a new program to replace and prune trees, I assisted with the transition to new trash pick-up schedules, and I participated in neighborhood "welcome wagons" to greet new neighbors in September. Each and every step of the way, I felt as though Mayor Menino acted in concert with the interests of the city and supported my efforts. ...

Still, he lists challenges he thinks the mayor needs to deal with, including education, payments in lieu of taxes and getting Boston ready for the future.

  • Boston's bicycle program, which has been trying to get off the ground for years, and recently took off...and gave us about a dozen miles of scattered bike lanes and a hundred or so bike lockup loops. Look at what NYC and Chicago have done- hundreds of miles of bike lanes, shower/locker stations, thousands of bike racks and lockup loops.
  • Highly preferential neighborhood treatments. Go walk around Beacon Hill or the North End and notice the nice fancy gas lanterns, perfect sidewalks, and brick/cobblestone streets. Now go walk around Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan...where they can't even keep the streets clean, literally and figuratively.
  • Speaking of which...the fustercluck that is the BRA, making decisions and power-plays in the background to "improve" our city, which seems to only consist of "increase BRA oversight into every aspect of a neighborhood." And, of course, only in the rich, predominantly white sections of the city. Historical houses in Mattapan? Who gives a fuck about them? But hey, want to change the color of your shutters on your house in the South End, and you gotta file that form in triplicate, buddy.
  • Menino's obsession with having his name plastered on absolutely everything, practically down to road signs. Is it any wonder that, when seniors are carted to the polls by the Mayor Thomas Menino Senior Shuttle to the Thomas Menino community center, that they vote for Thomas Menino?
  • Menino's complete failure to hold the police department accountable to performance standards or even its own citizens. The review board is a complete joke. BPD officers perjure themselves on the stand repeatedly and BPD management is so powerless over their rank and file that they can't even get them to park in legal parking spaces (or take public transit to/from work like the rest of us!) Roads are utter chaos because BPD won't do any traffic enforcement unless it is speeding or Driving While Minority related. They can't even handle ticketing people who park in bus stops.
  • Menino's inability to call the MBTA to task for routinely crippling his city on what seems like a weekly basis. The T goes down because someone yanks the wrong plug, and Menino doesn't say a word. How about a nice press-release body slam to tell Danny-boy to get his ass in line?

You want to see what a progressive, productive, well managed city looks like? Just cross the river into Cambridge or Somerville...

I will give the mayor credit for doing an excellent job from 1993 to about 2001. However, once the last recession hit there was a palpable change in the city's ability to get things done and labor negotiations seemed to fall off a cliff.

What I've concluded is that the mayor was good in tackling some low hanging fruit especially when times were flush. It's easy when you have lots of money (inflation over the past 10 years has run about 28%, the city's budget has increased 58% and total residential property taxes have increased about 95% and will probably get a lot worse in the next two years due to a drop in commercial values that will drive up residential taxes even as home values continue to decline). The mayor is at his worst when financial reality hits home as it did about 7 years ago and he starts blaming everyone but himself for the problems.

The city's not falling apart - yet - but the budget, despite the liberal funding and a flat payroll - somehow remains an issue, the schools (as Ross points out) are some of the best funded but worst performing in the state especially exclusive of the exam schools, public safety has taken a distinct turn for the worse, the fire department is a chronic basket case on both sides of the bargaining table, the BRA (which the mayor wants to give more power to) runs roughshod over the downtown neighborhoods. Most residents are blissfully unaware of the billions in unfunded retirement benefits that the city has (over)committed itself to that threaten to literally bankrupt the city in the next 20-30 years - think social security and medicare but better benefits and less income to the system.

Anyone who truly understands the city's financing scheme knows that these are all ticking time bombs. There is possibly still time to defuse them with an honest accounting and realistic budgeting but the mayor has knowingly let this fester for 16 years despite vocal warnings from the Boston Municipal Research Bureau, the FinCom and the Alliance of Boston Neighborhoods. Four more years could be too late - but I recognize that far too many will vote for the mayor because they shook his hand and their street lights work.

Another reason why Ross Levanto likes Menino is because it is well known that Ross is a huge Menino Ass Kisser. He's always bragging how he's always hanging with top people from Menino's team. All Ross is is a brown noser who is a follower to the end and could never make an independent decision for himself. This is the real reason why he supports Menino, just smell the poop on Levanto's nose...

Just because I have an opinion of Ross Levanto from the times I have met him doesn't mean I can't say what I feel. I find you hypocritical sometimes Adam. You go ahead and make fun of everyone you don't like, but when it comes to someone you do like you become defensive. That's alright you're just a coward and a geek who sits behind his computer everyday. You probably got beat up when you were little. You say that you work in Framingham and this is just a side gig. I doubt it... you're just a loser who likes to put others down because it makes you feel good.

Go after Levanto's positions, or mine, all you want, but do try to be adult about it. That's all I'm asking.

Gee, Jeffery - is there something else you'd like to share with us? Please, don't keep us in suspense. It sounds like you
have a history of people not appreciating your "feelings".
There's no obligation to read this blog or anyone else's.
It puzzles me though why you would give your valuable attention to a blog powered by someone you've labeled in this way.
I hope you feel better soon. Feel free to draw a breath now and then. You're welcome.

"You go ahead and make fun of everyone you don't like, but when it comes to someone you do like you become defensive"

Um, that's called being a masshole. Bostonians may not be fair, but at least we are loyal. If you don't like Adam's charming slant on current events then grumble about it with the rest of the fools on boston.com.

I'm not like you ("blog ranter, basement dweller, aka Boston Herald fan"), but I'm pretty sure you get some kind of perverse high from talking smack about people in ridiculously rude ways online...(I'm sorry let me translate: Jeffy like poopy talk people.)

But I want to give you the benefit of the doubt, since this morning's comment just seemed so way over the top.

So the only explanation that seems likely is that Ross must've stolen your girlfriend or otherwise hurt you in some way.

But then again, Ross is also one of the nicest, most generous and caring people that I know. I'm lucky to count him as a friend.

So there goes my theory, right out the window! Ross is obviously too nice of a guy to steal your girlfriend or otherwise do you harm.

Sorry Jeff, looks like you're just a jerk, who obviously harbors some kind of weird infatuation with Ross. Hope you get over that real soon, and find a girlfriend...although that probably won't happen until you wean yourself off of poop comments.

Good luck!

I am sure that Ross Levanto will be taking well care of in some way by our corrupt mayor just like all the rest of Menino's supporters. Menino wants to lay off cops and teachers while he still takes care of his very own and does not eliminate jobs of high paying city officials that we could afford to eliminate. These are just a few reasons why Tom Menino DOESN'T deserve four more years.

Tom Menino has done all that he can for the city of Boston after 16+ years. I really should say he has done a lot more for all of his friends, but this city does need new ideas!

He wants to leave in the middle of the term and hand over the office to Rob Consalvo. Do you really think the city council is ever going to elect Rob Consalvo to council president within the next 4 years knowing this? Tom Menino could end up leaving within the next term as mayor do to some health reasons and we could end up with someone who none of us want as mayor!!!

He also runs this city like a mob mentality and is forcing city employees to help out in his campaign. City employees are afraid not to support Menino such as holding a sign, getting nomination papers signed, placing a sign in front of their house, etc.

People are afraid because they know if Menino does win again and if he finds out you went against him, he will find a way to eliminate your job or make your life a lot worse as an employee of the city or a business who does work for the city.

This needs to stop!

Here are some more reasons:

His son- Out of all the Police Department's Officers, Menino's son was hired part time by Suffolk Construction. (To obtain a second job, you need the BPD Commissioner's approval)

Peter Welsh- Former staff from Menino's Office is working for Suffolk Construction.

Suffolk Construction receiving various contracts for the city of Boston.

I also hear that there is a cousin of Mayor Menino's also working for Suffolk Construction.

John Hamm- How his next door neighbor BPD Detective John Hamm had been working one job but receiving pay from both the Boston Police and the Boston Public Health Commission for the past 3 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if the mayor himself doesn't end up in handcuffs before the final election.

We need to allow someone else a chance to see what they can do for the city for the next 4 years!

Anyone but Menino, its time for a change!!!!!

Mumbles, the ill Duce, needs to be turfed out:

1. Petty vindictive killjoy behavior: Tall Ships

2. Building Dubai on the harbor, without the kitschy panache of Dubai. A missed opportunity for innovative development, sold out for (relatively) short but fast money.

3. Massive waste on public works, the illusion of progress - repaving the same streets over and over is not progress.

4. Laughable overreaction to small things - the Comedy Central light boards, etc.

5. The looming spectre of corruption (see #2 and #3 above and comments above about the BRA and Suffolk Construction).

I'm pretty sure you just want me to type that myself, which is really my last name in reverse, so that I'll be sent back to my alternate dimension.

Nice try, buddy.

Sincerely,
Mr. Hebgeef

Zak - to the best of my knowledge only McCrea, Yoon, Flaherty and Menino met the bar for signatures - I think there is one other candidate - Chuck Turner's city council predecessor I believe (can't recall his name) - that may be on the fence pending some signature authentication - but haven't heard anything lately.

Feegbeh is an unemployed 40 year old Liberian immigrant who speaks with a thick accent that is almost impossible to understand. He is already mayor of his own little world in his mind.
