Monday probably wasn't the best day to ride a bike on the T

What with the Green Line screwed up and all. Which might explain the glum look on the face of the bicyclist at Park Street on the Red Line, as captured by Charlotte.

But it was a perfect day to ride a bike INSTEAD of the T! Which is what I'm glad I was doing Monday...

Perhaps our star of the photo is looking so glum because he just found out that he would have to ride that bike all the way out to Riverside, because the T still does not allow bikes on the Green Line (unless that one is a folding model).

Can anyone explain why that is the case? I have always presumed that it was because of the stairs on the trains (considering that you can't bring a bike on the Mattapan HSL either), but with the introduction of the low-floor Breda cars, why should that still be the case?

Why is it any more cumbersome/restrictive/dangerous/insert-your-adjective-here to transport a bike on the Green Line than the all-terrain baby carriages (usually occupied by a child) that are routinely, and lawfully, transported on the Green Line (even during the rush hours)?

Definitely a folding bike - either a Dahon or a Downtube, would be my guess (I own a Friday and we have a Novara/dahon in the family).

I can't figure out why he isn't riding it either. At least riding it past the trouble zone. If headed out to riverside, he could take it on the commuter rail and bike from another station.

I thought you might weigh in, Swirly. I was hoping you might offer some thoughts on the Green Line bike prohibition, too. Why can't I take my non-foldable road bike out to Riverside so I can bypass all of the stop signs and traffic lights of Brookline and Newton and quickly reach the vast uninterrupted expanses of Weston to open it up?

while balancing a netbook on a bike on train ...

The T is stupid. That's why. Every other city I travel to can handle bikes and build in appropriate things to clip them to in space saving configurations.
